Rangers boss Steven Gerrard last night captured Leicester City’s Calvin Bassey on a four-year deal.

And MailSport understands the Ibrox gaffer beat off the likes of West Ham United and Bayer Leverkusen for the £3million-rated left-back.

Foxes gaffer Brendan Rodgers, the former Celtic boss, was also keen to keep the 20-year-old at the King Power Stadium.

But Bassey, who also plays in central defence, opted for Glasgow with Gers paying around £230,000 compensation for the cross-border transfer.

Gerrard is delighted at snaring a player who qualifies to play for England, Italy and Nigeria.

“Calvin is a strong, dynamic athlete who is very much the modern-day full-back. He’s left-footed, powerful and enjoys driving forward. He’s equipped to thrive in the combative nature of Scottish football.”

Bassey will hook up with Rangers when the transfer window opens on July 1.

The youngster played at Ibrox in a closed-door development match at Ibrox in September 2017, when the young Foxes side ran out 6-1 winners.

But he can’t wait to properly sample the Ibrox atmosphere. Bassey said: “I’m delighted to join such a massive club and I’m buzzing to get started.

“I feel Rangers are right for me because I’ve seen players such as Joe Aribo come from south of the

border and do so well.

“It’s a massive platform for me to take my career to the next level.

“I played at Ibrox when it was empty but you could feel the atmosphere and history when nobody was there.

“I can’t wait to play there when it’s full.”
