Peterborough have thrown out a £5million bid from Celtic for Ivan Toney.

The Posh’s chairman, Darragh McAnthony, confirmed on Twitter on Tuesday night that a Scottish team had tabled a bid for their top scorer.

A senior source at the English League One club has told Record Sport the offer had come from the Premiership champions and was well short of their valuation.

McAnthony tweeted: “Look, we have had multiple bids for him from Prem/Champ & one from Scotland.

Ivan Toney would prefer to join to Celtic over Brentford

Ivan Toney would prefer to join to Celtic over Brentford Celtic have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Peterborough United forward Ivan Toney as the player would, according to the Glasgow Times, prefer to move to Parkhead than move to Brentford. Both The Hoops and The Bees have lodged bids for the 24-year-old but Celtic have had their offer rejected as it doesn’t mean Posh’s valuation. However, if Celtic are able to agree a fee with the League One club, then it appears that the player himself will push for a move to Celtic Park rather than a switch to Brentford.

But his initial valuation of the Scotland international fell miles short of the figure that would catch Celtic ' s eye

“As expected, I won’t go into who etc as that’s private.

“As of today he is still our player.”

The same London Road source confirmed that the Celtic offer was well short of other bids that would have broken the £6.5 million mark, with add ons, but they have also been turned down.

New Celtic first-team coach Gavin Strachan had previously worked with Toney as he was assistant manager at Peterborough until the summer.

Strachan has given boss Neil Lennon a glittering reference but it now remains to be seen if the Celtic hierarchy will sanction the sort of numbers that would make the deal happen.

Premiership-pushing Brentford have also tabled a big offer for Toney, who netted 24 goals in League One last season.

Rangers are also interested in Toney but would need to sell before they could buy at that sort of level.

Peterborough United’ s Ivan Toney has been scouted, while the club is also aware of the availability of Scotland striker Steven Fletcher, who is a free agent after being allowed to leave Sheffield Wednesday. Celtic have already lined up a deal to sign Greek keeper Vasilios Barkas from AEK Athens and they are also keen on West Ham United striker Albian Ajeti.

The Swiss striker is wanted on loan and would be viewed as a cheaper alternative to Toney.

Sources in London claim a deal for Ajeti is close but Celtic have denied that over the past 24 hours.

Celtic have turned their attentions to Barkas after doubts over first-choice target Fraser Forster returning to Parkhead following his successful loan from Southampton last season.

Parkhead powerbrokers thrashed out a deal with AEK for Barkas, who caught a flight to Glasgow to seal a four-year deal.

The 26-year-old and his representatives are happy with the personal terms on offer and barring any last-minute hitches the Holland-born star – who will have a Parkhead medical – is set to seal his switch and join the squad ahead of Sunday’s Premiership opener against Hamilton Accies.

The deal will see Celtic pay an initial fee of £4.5m to AEK, with potentially £1m more in add-ons being paid over the term of Barkas’ stay.
