The young German cyclist Jan Riedmann was killed in a training ride after an accident. He was 17 years old.

The fatal accident occurred on Saturday in the Bavarian cycling stronghold of Karbach when Riedmann was taken by a 58-year-old driver when turning and collided with the car. On Sunday, the young athlete, who wanted to graduate from school next year, succumbed to serious head injuries despite quick help at the University Hospital in Würzburg.

Riedmann was part of the Auto Eder Bayern team, a junior team of the UCI World team Bora-hansgrohe. This confirmed the terrible incident on Monday via Twitter: "With great sadness we say goodbye to Jan Riedmann after a tragic accident at the weekend." The team expressed condolences to the bereaved.

Riedmann's father was once a cyclist in the Bundesliga team in Bavaria and passed on his enthusiasm for sport to his son.

World-class driver Peter Sagan also took an interest in the fate of the Riedmann family and wrote on Twitter: "The death of a cyclist in a traffic accident is such sad news. My deepest sympathy goes to Jan's family and his loved ones."
