This time last year, brave and battling Villa eventually went down 3-1 at Spurs after John McGinn popped up to put the newly-promoted side into a shock 1-0 lead.

Smith had not long completed the surprise signing of Douglas Luiz prior to that fixture in North London, with the Brazilian one of a dozen permanent signings as Villa forked out around £130 million on new recruits.

This weekend, meanwhile, marks just three weeks since Villa secured their top-flight status following a 1-1 draw with West Ham and, come Monday (August 17), the players are set to return to the pitches at Bodymoor Heath for pre-season following a much-needed three-week break.

With the fixtures out by this time next week (August 21), what will Villa's starting XI look like this year compared to last? Villa went with Smith's usual 4-1-4-1 system at Spurs with Jack Grealish in midfield alongside McGinn and anchorman Conor Hourihane.

Arsenal's redundancies announcement undermines the club's positive new identity under Mikel Arteta

Arsenal's redundancies announcement undermines the club's positive new identity under Mikel Arteta This week, Arsenal announced 55 redundancies at the club. But while they look to splash out in the transfer market, the news leaves a sour tasteWhich is why what’s happening at Arsenal is so regrettable. Less than a week after winning the FA Cup with that memorable fightback against Chelsea, and teasing a new, exciting era under Mikel Arteta, the club announced a wave of redundancies, with 55 members of staff expected to lose their job over the course of the next month.

You might know that his name was Alexander Hamilton, that he was one of America’s founding fathers, you might even know that he was the first secretary of the treasury and founded America’s financial system. How much do you really know about the man on the ten-dollar bill?

And FFXIV in 2019 has so many features that there are things that you might not know about playing with the controller and how to use it to setup target filters, move the camera, set map markers, navigate the UI, and master Here are 20 + things you might not know until now in this FFXIV controller guide.

There were four debutants who started - Tom Heaton, Bjorn Engels, Trezeguet and Wesley - with Douglas Luiz and Jota making their first appearances from off the bench.

Now, with Villa set to spend big again amid reports of a £100 million summer budget, what would be the dream starting line-up should Villa obtain their top targets?

Here, an £80 million outlay would have been spent on just four potential new arrivals, a strategy that is polar opposite to last year's quantity over quality which, to some extent, was arguably needed.

We'll start across the back four and Smith will be hopeful Heaton will be fully-fit by the time the campaign kicks-off in a month's time. The 34-year-old made 20 starts last term before his season was ended with a knee ligament tear.

In front of Heaton, Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings will begin the season as Smith's first-choice centre-back pairing after their impressive displays which helped Villa over the line last term. At left-back, Matt Targett will also look to kick on again following his first full season in new surroundings after his £14 million switch. However, one change could be at right-back given Villa's touted interest in 23-year-old Nottingham Forest man Matty Cash. Forest are demanding up to £15 million for their asset with the likes of AC Milan, Sheffield United, West Ham and Southampton all keen. Cash featured 42 times in the Championship last year, scoring three and assisting five as his stock-level continues to rise. Villa are reportedly interested and would look at a deal around the £10 million mark which would represent a decent bit of business for a player of Cash's age, ability and versatility knowing he can also operate in central midfield.

And the players who stay will probably have to forego part of their salary again. “The squad won't look very different when we start the competitive games in mid-September. It will largely be this squad that is now training here, ”said the sports director of the Bundesliga soccer team, Jochen Schneider, in an interview with Sky TV on Saturday.

In Villa's midfield, meanwhile, Douglas Luiz was the star throughout Project Restart and the sky's the limit now for the brilliant Brazilian after finally settling down in Birmingham. The 22-year-old passed an English exam which really helped his understanding with John McGinn in the middle of midfield. As for McGinn, he'll be hoping to start this season like he did last following a 10-goal haul in his first 20 games for club and country. The Scot broke his ankle and, in March, a shin bone which dented his fitness levels for the run-in. The 25-year-old is Smith's go-to man, though, and he will be again throughout 20/21.

Ahead of Douglas and McGinn could be Jack Grealish. The No.10 could well be reinstated to a more advanced central area given Villa's interest in big-money moves for exciting wingers. The captain, who looks set to stay after guiding Villa to safety, could be pushed up higher up alongside Villa's No.9 given Douglas and McGinn will be in behind him covering and mopping up every loose ball. As for Grealish, he'll be hoping for another scintillating season in the Premier League and will look to better his eight Premier League goals by getting into scoring positions much more often. It's Euro 2021 year, too, which is another carrot to go at by finally making his England bow.

Liverpool target David Brooks could be the key to success on multiple fronts

Liverpool target David Brooks could be the key to success on multiple fronts Liverpool are leading the race for the Welshman’s signature, with Klopp keen to add depth on the wingsThat will not be tolerated again next campaign and is the reason a £35m move for David Brooks - reported by The Star - makes perfect sense. Bournemouth’s Welsh midfielder is seen as the ideal replacement for Adam Lallana and it’s not hard to see why.

Now, here's where at least £70 million will be spent in forward areas. We'll start with Werder Bremen's exciting Kosovan, Milot Rashica, who looks set for a move away following reports Villa have submitted the best offer so far for the 24-year-old. Rashica, scorer of 11 goals last year for struggling Werder, is open for a move away and it's Villa who are reportedly leading the chase with RB Leipzig, Monaco and Wolves in hot pursuit. With Rashica taking up the wide-left spot, over on the right could see another £25 million spent on long-term target Said Benrahma. The Brentford man will be desperate for a move to the Premier League after missing out on promotion with Brentford and it's fully expected Smith will table an offer for his former Bees player. Benrahma scored a staggering 17 Championship goals last term, with the Algerian seen as a much more potent signing than Anwar El Ghazi and Trezeguet. Villa face competition from the likes of Chelsea, West Ham and Leeds United. Brentford, meanwhile, are wanting to hold out for as much as £30 million for their star man.

Staying with Brentford, Smith will look to raid his former club once more by grabbing 26-goal hot-shot Ollie Watkins - Villa's top transfer target of this window. The Villa boss watched the goal-getter at Wembley in the play-off final and wants to add firepower up front given Wesley's fitness concerns. Watkins, 24, can play all across the front, too, which is another string to his bow Smith admires. Again, though, the Bees are demanding top dollar for their striker and will not accept anything less than £25 million. Villa, meanwhile, value Watkins at just under £20 million.

Are Crystal Palace finally starting to see the value in youth?

Are Crystal Palace finally starting to see the value in youth? Crystal Palace's signing of 19-year-old Nathan Ferguson indicates they could be starting to look at players who will improve – and have that crucial resale valueThat has to change, not least because the key to advancement for a club in Palace’s position lies in buying underdeveloped players, benefitting from their growth, and then making a profit from their eventual sale. It’s the virtuous cycle of improvement and the only avenue of advancement available to clubs who don’t have access to an oligarch’s money pit or the reserves of a sovereign wealth fund.

Villa's dream line-up for the Premier League opening day, 4-2-3-1: Heaton; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett; Douglas Luiz, McGinn; Benrahma, Grealish, Rashica; Watkins. Subs: Nyland, Guilbert, Hause, Hourihane, Nakamba, Trezeguet, Wesley.
