Gareth Bale will hold showdown talks with Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane this week to discuss his future, according to reports in Spain.

The Welshman will report to the club's Valdebebas training complex in the coming days along with the rest of his Los Blancos team-mates as they begin pre-season preparations.

It is as yet unknown, however, whether Bale will be a Real Madrid player next season.

But with the international break with Wales coming up at the beginning of September, Spanish outlet Marca report that Zidane will meet with Bale for crunch talks over his future this week.

Real Madrid's top two priorities this summer are to get Bale and fellow outcast James Rodriguez out the door and off the wage bill and they have so far been unsuccessful.

Bale is the highest earner at the Bernabeu, taking home £350,000 a week after tax, while Rodriguez is also on a princely £280,000 a week.

This week promises to be an important one for the Spanish champions and they want all their ducks in a row before Bale departs for international duty with Wales.

The club are said to be fearful that Bale will say something critical in the media while on press duties with Wales and one bizarre column appearing in AS telling the winger he would be wise to show Real Madrid respect in the upcoming international break.

That is why it is of utmost importance that Zidane and Bale find common ground in their meeting this week.

Bale's agent has said repeatedly that his client is happy in Madrid and is more than happy to see out the remaining two years of his lucrative contract.

But it is no secret that the club are working hard to sound out potential suitors.

AS claim that Tottenham's interest in signing the player is indeed very 'real' and Jose Mourinho wants to bring the Welshman back to the club for whom he shone almost decade ago.

Mourinho is said to have voiced his desire to bring Bale to north London this summer, but the player's wage demands will make a move nigh-on impossible.

Bale's £13.5m-a-year wage is of course a huge problem for Madrid and is eating away chunks of what they could offer potential new signings.

AS, however, suggest it might be in Madrid's best interest to pay a portion of the player's wages if a club comes in with a serious offer just to get most of his salary off the expenses. If that is the case, then Spurs might well become very interested.

Otherwise, a move for the player seems unlikely.

The only other hope Madrid have, according to AS, is an MLS club somehow stumping up the funds to offer the player a handsome wage packet to play Stateside.

Many in this corner of the world sympathise with the player's situation.

He has been frozen out and cast aside by Zidane, despite helping the club to 13 trophies including four Champions Leagues and two La Liga titles, and critics in the Spanish press demand he shows respect to the club.

On these shores, however, many believe quite the opposite to be true and want Los Blancos to hold the Welshman in far higher regard than they do.

One thing is for certain, Bale's media conferences while on Wales duty will be a very interesting watch, especially following this week's proposed showdown talks with the Real Madrid hierarchy.
