Serie A side Atalanta are reportedly eyeing a move for Schalke winger Rabbi Matondo.

The Wales international, 20, rose through the Cardiff City academy before leaving for Manchester City when he was 15.

Having realised the pathway was blocked to the first team he sought a move to German outfit Schalke, where he has made steady progress, scoring two goals in his maiden season in the Bundesliga.

His breakthrough season attracted the attention of clubs back in the UK, with WalesOnline having been told that Manchester United had made contact over a potential move for the talented Welsh youngster.

Now, though, interest has been piqued in Italy, with Atalanta thought to be considering a move for the Schalke star, according to Sky in Italy.

They report that Atalanta are monitoring both Matondo, who has four Wales caps to his name, and Fluminense's Marcos Paulo as they bid to bolster their attacking options this term.

They will certainly have competition, though, with United among a number of clubs said to be monitoring the young Welshman.

The Old Trafford club appear to have drawn up a shortlist of alternative options if their move for Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho falls through.

The two clubs are thought to be a way apart in their valuation of the player, with Dortmund wanting in the region of £108million for the England international.

Man United are monitoring the progress of Schalke youngster Rabbi Matondo as a Plan B if they can't land Though Wales manager and United legend Ryan Giggs will likely have provided some key intel on City could still move for him, but it seems as if Tonali will be staying put for the foreseeable future.

United are hellbent on adding in that department in this window, though, and Matondo's Wales team-mate David Brooks has also been identified as an option for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Both Matondo and Brooks, who will cost around £40m from Bournemouth, are seen as cut-price options if United cannot haggle Dortmund down from their exorbitant asking price for Sancho.
