Hamilton and Hibs fought out a five-goal thriller under the lights at Easter Road on Friday evening, and it was a game that had a lot of intrigue... but was also bizarre.

Brian Rice's men did really well to pull the game back to within a goal, and had Marios Ogkmpoe netted a penalty 10 minutes into the second half they might even have taken a point from Edinburgh.

But let's not kid anybody on here - had Hibs been 4-0 up at half-time, few could have argued with that, and the nature of Hamilton's goals were somewhat caused by the hosts.

Hibernian v Hamilton Academical (19:45). Hibs are unbeaten in seven league meetings with Hamilton (W5 D 2 ) since a 3 -1 reverse at Easter Road in August 2017 under Neil Lennon. A fifth consecutive home win over the Accies would take the Edinburgh side to 20 points from 10 games , a very healthy

A Ross Callachan penalty after Callum Smith had been felled inside the box, and a Ryan Porteous own-goal; the defender getting on the end of a cross from the same player.

Here are some talking points from a freezing night in the capital.

Hamilton need to look at their defence

Accies went into this one with what looked like a back five of Lee Hodson, Hakeem Odoffin, Shaun Want, Jamie Hamilton and Scott McMann, but Hibs were rampant in the first half, so it certainly didn't shore things up.

Want was forced off in the first half and he was replaced by Kyle Munro, who didn't do a lot wrong, but the question is, what can Brian Rice do?

The gaffer said the start Hamilton made cost them the game and that is undoubtedly true; they could have been 1-0 down inside 45 seconds and Kevin Nisbet could easily have had a first-half hat-trick.

F1 Russian Grand Prix: Hamilton targets Schumacher's record

F1 Russian Grand Prix: Hamilton targets Schumacher's record Lewis Hamilton will have a chance to equal Michael Schumacher's 91-win record this weekend. It appears to be inevitable that Hamilton will match and probably surpass the German's record of victories this season. The Briton is also well on his way to securing a seventh F1 World Championship title this season. That would also bring him equal to Schumacher's title record.

Two goals from Rakish Bingham help Hamilton emerge convincing winners over a sluggish Hibernian at Easter Road . On the stroke of half-time, only a wonder save by Marciano from a great run and shot by Crawford kept the home goal intact as frustration began to creep into the home fans.

Two late goals move Hibernian to within four points of second place as they beat Partick Thistle at Easter Road . Then Thistle thought they had taken the lead. Sammon forced Bell into another terrific stop when his header from a corner was destined for the bottom corner - Storey reacted to knock the

As it was, Hibs seemed to think the game was won at 3-0 and Hamilton stepped up a gear, with Callum Smith and Ross Callachan in particular causing problems for Jack Ross' men.

To be fair, in the main this season Hamilton haven't conceded many goals - defeats they have had outside of Celtic and Rangers have been 1-0 or 2-1, but it's back to the drawing board at the back, nonetheless.

Strikers are not on target

Hamilton started the game last night with only one recognised striker in the team in young Andrew Winter, backed up by David Templeton and they struggled to make an impact in the first half.

Marios Ogkmpoe replaced Winter at the interval and Hamilton had much more life about them. The big striker did well to win the penalty, even if he fluffed his lines when it mattered.

Tunde Owolabi and Callum Smith also came on, with the latter in particular making quite an impact, and it begs the question why none of these guys started.

Masi: Hamilton F1 Russian GP penalty points "inappropriate"

Masi: Hamilton F1 Russian GP penalty points FIA race director Michael Masi says that the Russian GP stewards decided that the original Formula 1 penalty points awarded to Lewis Hamilton was "inappropriate" after a post-race reviewHamilton was awarded two five-second time penalties for conducting two practice starts outside the designated zone beyond the pit exit, and both came with an extra penalty point for his licence.

Hibernian chief executive Leeann Dempster said: "With the structure we already have in place, Paul is the right person to embrace that support and take it to a new level." There was a notable victory over Hearts at Tynecastle and draws against both halves of the Old Firm at Easter Road .

From two goals down, Hibernian mount a stunning fightback to take a narrow lead into the second leg of their Europa League tie with Asteras Tripolis. The winger strode clear of back-tracking Hibs defenders, and from an acute angle, beat Adam Bodgan at his near post.

However, big Marios is still to hit the target this season and he's not alone in that respect - NONE of Hamilton's strikers have opened their accounts yet, which must be concerning for boss Brian Rice by this point.

Top scorer with three is defender Hakeem Odoffin.

Covid isn't helping

a person standing in front of a building: Ryan Fulton was missing after testing positive for coronavirus © SNS Group Ryan Fulton was missing after testing positive for coronavirus

Hamilton have been hit quite hard by positive coronavirus tests over the last few weeks and that happened again yesterday, with goalkeeper Ryan Fulton ruled out and young Kyle Gourlay put between the sticks.

New signing Ryan Scully, who has plenty of experience at Dunfermline, Morton and Albion Rovers to name a few clubs, was on the bench.

All of that means Hamilton haven't had a settled side for a while, because Lee Hodson has also had to self-isolate without testing positive because St Mirren goalkeepr Jak Alnwick - with whom he currently lodges - did.

That is the nature of football at the moment, however, and Accies unfortunately just have to get on with it.

But it doesn't help with a squad that is already pretty threadbare to begin with.
