Chris Iwelumo is definitely someone you’d want to fight your corner.

With a 6ft 3ins frame and built like The Rock, he’s not the type of guy to argue with. When he was a player, defenders down in England used to bounce off him.

Now, it’s his fellow pundits who come off second best if they try to knock Scottish football.

Iwelumo is one of Sportscene’s new TV analysts and has fallen in love with our game again.

Alfredo Morelos bias is clear and Rangers star would have been red carded if roles were reversed - Hotline Gordon Parks took your calls and there wasn't really anyone happy with performances over the weekend. Alfredo Morelos taking an elbow from Ryan Porteous was also on the Hotline agenda and there were no Celtic fans handing their side plaudits for taking the spoils against Livingston.

Hibs winger Martin Boyle makes his first start since July as he makes his way back from a second bad knee injury inside 12 months. With the title race continuing to rattle along at a thrilling pace, league leaders Celtic host Hamilton Accies while Rangers lock horns with Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

It'll be a close contest but I reckon Hibs strength up front with the likes of Kevin Nisbet, coupled with with Dundee United's Lawrence Shankland being an injury doubt, means the visitors will take the I think we'll see an attacking Rangers formation and another three points. Amy's prediction : 3-1.

As well as being able to see family in Coatbridge and Ayrshire again – restrictions permitting – he’s part of an iconic show that he grew up watching.

And having spent most of his career in England, the former striker has been impressed by what he has seen so far.

He has always been a supporter of the game up here. That’s why it still irks him to hear counterparts on the other side of the border talk it down.

We should probably be grateful to have ex-pros like Iwelumo sticking up for it, especially with Scottish football taking a financial kicking as a result of Covid-19.

And having cast his eye over every side in the Premiership, Iwelumo is pleasantly surprised by the quality on show.

He believes the likes of Aberdeen and Hibs can have a major say in the title race.

Celtic beat Sarajevo and Rangers edged out Galatasaray on Thursday to ensure both will feature in the group stage for the third straight year. One of the most mouth-watering potential opponents for Celtic is Leicester City and a reunion with double-treble winning manager Brendan Rodgers.

And as for the age-old argument about whether Rangers and Celtic could cut it in the Premier League – Iwelumo is unequivocal in his view.

Exuding positivity, the 42-year-old told MailSport: “There have been so many refreshing things in Scottish football already this season.

“Jack Ross is one, for me. He has been outstanding at Hibs because he’s trying to bridge that gap to the Old Firm.

“I don’t like it when pundits say Hibs and Aberdeen are fighting it out for third place. Their ambition should be to challenge for first
and second.

“I know it’s a big gap because of the size of Rangers and Celtic. But it has to be the aim for a Hibs, Aberdeen or Hearts when they get back up.

“When Leicester City won the
Premier League the odds were
ridiculous, near impossible.

“But the fact they did, against
massive clubs with so much history, should give every team in Scotland a little bit of hope that the impossible can happen.

Follow all the reaction as Hibernian maintain their 100% record with a 1-0 Scottish Premiership win at Dundee United. It wasn't quite the match we hoped for but congratulations go to Hibs for making it three wins in a row to match the Hibs record of 1974.

“The way Jack speaks is infectious, he’s so enthusiastic. And Hibs have looked good this season.

“The standard in Scotland is very good. Some of the goals we’ve seen this season have been excellent.

“When people down south look down on our game, it annoys me. Many players have left here and done really well in England.

“But our game doesn’t get the respect it deserves down there.

“It can be frustrating. Now that I’m in the middle of it, I can see some real quality and I always try to fight our corner down the road.

“There’s always the argument about how Celtic and Rangers would fare in the Premier League but
people down there don’t realise how massive those two clubs are.

“With the influx of £200million every year – after a couple of seasons with that cash and good recruitment – both of them would be competing for top six, if not the Champions League places.”

Iwelumo has always had a
presence and that comes across in his punditry.

As well as having a knowledge of the game, thanks to a 19-year career that spanned 18 different clubs, he offers tactical insight. And he was delighted to join an institution like Sportscene last summer.

Iwelumo, who graduated from Staffordshire University in 2016 after studying sports writing and
broadcasting, said: “The opportunity came up in July and it’s something
I was excited about.

“It gets me up to Scotland to see my family and I’m working, which is great especially at this difficult time. I grew up watching Sportscene with the likes of Dougie Donnelly and Archie Macpherson.

“I’m enjoying it. I’ve fallen back in love with Scottish football again, which is good. And I’ve got a real buzz because I’ve been so impressed with the quality in the league.

“As a pundit, I don’t sit on the fence. I’ve always got an opinion and I’m not afraid to voice it.

“When I first started on talkSPORT a few years ago, I wanted feedback.

“Doing a university course on the subject made people take me a bit more seriously and I graduated with a first-class degree.

“That propelled me and the work followed on. I like to think I’ve come into my own after that.

“At first, when you’re talking about players you’ve played with, you don’t want to come for them.

“But if they were in my team, I’d give them an opinion. So that’s what I try to do now. If you ask me a
question, I’ll give you my view.

“If it’s way off, that’s fine. But it’s my opinion. That’s just the way I am. I grew up as a Celtic fan – but if they’ve been rubbish I’ll say so.

“They wear their heart on their sleeve and sometimes the
emotion gets the better of you.”

Iwelumo is excited at the prospect of an Old Firm title race going to the wire, with Rangers trying to stop Celtic’s 10 In A Row bid.

He said: “This is going to be a
fantastic season, the Old Firm have set the bar so high.

“The excitement of whether Rangers can stop Celtic doing the unprecedented 10 – there’s so much pressure.

“As well as what they do in Europe, these are exciting times for Scottish
football. It could come down to which side is more clinical in the Old Firm derbies.

“The competition
Gerrard has up front now, by bringing in Cedric Itten and Kemar Roofe, will make a difference.

“Alfredo Morelos had to sit on the bench for a while but now he’s
hungry again.

“Celtic have that as well. They don’t have like-for-like cover for Odsonne Edouard and hopefully he’s not going anywhere.

“Both clubs are going toe to toe right now, they’re both unbeaten.

“I think this season will go right to the finishing line, which is
fascinating for us watching on from the side lines.”

Every Scottish Premiership transfer in and out as clubs finalise squads .
It's been a long window but it's finally over - and our clubs have done a lot of business. And they might be reflecting for a while. No club has been quiet in these tumultuous times as massive player turnover brought on in part by the Covid-19 crisis has seen a need to bring in plenty of reinforcements.
