With four goals apiece in each of his first two seasons at Rangers, few would have singled out Connor Goldson as a dangerman ahead of Saturday's derby.

That didn't stop one punter putting down a fiver on a Goldson double ahead of kick off, and he walked away with £1500 after the defender scored both goals in a 2-0 win for Steven Gerrard's men.

Over the years the likes of Alec Cleland, Jonas Thern and Mo Edu have scored crucial derby goals for the Ibrox side.

There are some, however, whose winners have come as even more of a shock. Here are the five most unexpected scorers of winning goals for Rangers against Celtic.

Connor Goldson has played down the gap between Rangers and Celtic despite another Old Firm win for the Hoops on Sunday. Celtic dominated the Ladbrokes Premiership meeting at Parkhead and hit the woodwork four times with Gers goalkeeper Allan McGregor making several good saves.

5) Connor Goldson at Celtic Park, October 2020

In fairness to the Englishman, he has proved to be an aerial threat since joining from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2018.

It was his header that opened the scoring on Saturday, with Celtic keeper Vasilis Barkas making an unconvincing attempt to keep it out.

Few would have expected Goldson to double his tally, but he did so early in the second half.

His first attempt was blocked by former Brighton team-mate Shane Duffy, but Goldson showed composure to slide it past Barkas and seal a comfortable victory.

4) Gregory Vignal at Celtic Park, February 2005

The French left-back scored three goals in 40 games during his time at Rangers.

It's unlikely Martin O'Neill would have pinpointed him as a threat, and goalkeeper Rab Douglas clearly wasn't expecting much when the 23-year-old lined up a shot from 25 yards.

He struck it with power, but straight at Douglas. The keeper, however, somehow spilled the shot and Rangers were a goal up with 19 minutes remaining.

Nacho Novo added to Douglas' misery eight minutes from time when he lobbed him to make it 2-0.

3) Kevin Thomson at Ibrox, March 2008

Hardly the most prolific goalscorer in his playing days, Thomson scored three in his 109 appearances for Rangers.

His first goal for the club was one to remember. In the final minute of the first half, he played a one-two with Jean-Claude Darcheville before taking a touch and sliding it through the legs of Artur Boruc.

Walter Smith's side saw the second half out with Thomson's strike proving to be the game's only goal.

2) Bert Konterman at Hampden, February 2002

A much maligned figure during his time in Glasgow, Konterman ensured that Rangers fans would remember him for the right reasons with a stunning winner at Hampden.

Peter Lovenkrands had given Rangers the lead in the first half of the League Cup semi-final, but a Bobo Balde equaliser with 20 minutes remaining meant Alex McLeish's side faced extra time.

15 minutes from time, Konterman fired in a blistering shot from long-range that gave Douglas no chance and sent Rangers to the final, where they beat Ayr United 4-0.

1) Ugo Ehiogu at Celtic Park, March 2007

The late Ugo Ehiogu played just 12 games for Rangers, but left the club as a hero after a sensational derby winner.

Signed on a free transfer from Middlesbrough two months earlier, the 34-year-old went up for a corner five minutes into the second-half.

Celtic were unable to clear, and after a series of headers the ball came towards Ehiogu who had his back to goal.

Stunned fans then saw the centre-back improvise and execute a perfect overhead kick. Artur Boruc got his hands to it, but was unable to keep out the powerful effort.

That was the only goal of the game and of the player's Rangers tenure. He may only have had a short spell at Ibrox, but Ehiogu will always be remembered fondly by Rangers fans thanks to that legendary strike.

Derby County Eye Move for Palace Striking Outcast .
Crystal Palace outcast Connor Wickham could make a deadline day exit from the club as Championship side Derby County turn their attention towards signing the striker. According to Football Insider, the Rams are ‘desperately’ trying to recruit a new striker before Friday’s transfer deadline and have identified the 27-year-old as a potential option. An unfortunate run of injuries has limited the former Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday striker to just 39 appearances since the start of the 2016/17 campaign. Wickham is now entering the final year of his current deal with the Eagles, and Hodgson’s side may be tempted to cash in.
