After the mediocre Bundesliga start, Bundesliga soccer team Bayer Leverkusen reported back in the Europa League with a shooting festival and celebrated a clear victory at the start of the group phase. 73 days after the quarter-finals against Inter Milan, the team of coach Peter Bosz defeated the four-time French champions OGC Nice well deserved 6: 2 (2: 1). Thanks to the success over the supposedly strongest opponent in Group C, the Werkself immediately put themselves in a good starting position for the clear goal of the knockout round.
Nadiem Amiri (11th) and Lucas Alario (16th) put the Leverkusen in the lead. After Amine Gouiri's (31st) goal, Moussa Diaby (61st), substitute Karim Bellarabi (79th and 83rd) and Florian Wirtz (87th) increased for the Leverkusen team, which was much better than in previous Bundesliga games. The Rhinelander, against whom Alexis Claude-Maurice (90th) only managed to achieve cosmetic results for the guests, have now been undefeated for 13 consecutive European Cup games in the local BayArena.
The wrong right-back? Aaron Wan-Bissaka's best qualities are what make him unsuited to Gareth Southgate's England
In England's surfeit of top right-backs, Manchester United's Aaron Wan-Bissaka may be the best defensively. That's the problem, writes Richard JollySome of that may not be true, but it is nevertheless notable that Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s decision to put the Congolese flag on his Instagram biography generated suggestions that he is changing his international allegiance. Or, as he played for both the Democratic Republic of Congo and England at Under-20 level, simply opting for the country he represented first.
Sport Managing Director Rudi Völler had clearly formulated the Rhinelander's goal before the game. "The claim is definitely to move into the knockout round. That is very clear," said the 60-year-old on Sky Sport News.
In the pouring rain and deep grass, the hosts had a hard time with the low-lying guests in the opening minutes, who offered a compact 5-3-2. The idea of Nice coach Patrick Vieira, who made his debut on the international stage as a coach, was quickly thwarted.
The team from the Cote d'Azur, which the former World and European Champion 2018 had taken over from Borussia Dortmund's current coach Lucien Favre, was undermined by a nice one-two from Leon Bailey and Alario. After Bailey's pass into the depths, Amiri left the former Bayern professional Dante and shot an ice cold flat. Five minutes later, Alario shone under the crossbar with a powerful shot from an acute angle.
Ranked! The 10 best playmakers in the world
The best playmakers – also known as No.10s – combine passing, vision, composure and flair. Here, we rank the very bestModern day No.10s are expected to show a level of discipline when their team is out of possession, and may even be expected to create from unorthodox positions. Therefore, some of the players on this list start games on the wing, or deeper as part of the midfield. The one thing they all have in common, however, is that they do their best work when they pick up the ball between the opponents midfield and defence, and look to take up central positions around the box when their team is on the ball.
Bayer looked unleashed afterwards: Nice goalkeeper Walter Benitez rescued Bailey's long-range shot (21st) brilliantly, and Benitez was also there for Diaby's full-cocked shot (26th).
Then the rain subsided and Leverkusen too, especially defensively: young talent Gouiri took the first opportunity and slid the ball finely into the far corner past the powerless Bayer goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky. Shortly before the break, Bayer was also lucky that Hassane Kamara (41st) just forgot.
Nice had breathed new life into themselves, captain Dante clapped his hands encouragingly before the restart and cheered on his teammates with "Allez les blancs" ("Let's go, you whites). It initially helped: Leverkusen had more possession and Nice had the chance : Against the convincing Gouiri (54th) only Hradecky was better.
Bayer pressed, Nice tried to counter. Then the conspicuous Exequiel Palacios conquered the ball in the opposing penalty area with a clean tackle, Diaby completed and broke Nice's resistance
