How have golden oldies fared at Man United after Cavani's arrival? Manchester United's signing of 33-year-old Edinson Cavani went against the club's traditional reputation of building teams around youthful endeavour, but it isn't for the first time. But it's not the first time the club famous for the Busby Babes and Class of 92 have dipped into the thirty-something market to give their squad balance.

Edinson Cavani is set to join Manchester United on deadline day it what is nominally a free transfer, but is going to cost the Red Devils plenty of money. He is now coming to the Premier League with United agreeing a one-year deal with an option for a second year for the Uruguayan forward.

Bruno Fernandes will captain Manchester United for the first time as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's "depleted" side kick off their Champions League campaign without Harry Maguire, Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood.

The 33-year-old's combative qualities were still on display last term, Cavani averaging 2.7 duels per 90 minutes in the league, a better tally than PSG's preferred central striker Mauro Icardi.

Fred believes Cavani's experience will be hugely beneficial to new team-mates Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood as they look to improve.

"He's a superb centre-forward," Fred told United Review. "He plays for Uruguay, and he has scored a lot of goals for Paris Saint-Germain. I'm sure he'll bring a lot of passion to the team. Watching him play, you see he's constantly battling, always looking to score. I'm sure that he'll bring a lot to our group, our squad.

"I'm really rooting for this, that we can grow with his arrival, together with [Alex] Telles and Facundo [Pellistri]. Our group will develop a lot. It's going to be great, we hope he can help us score a lot of goals, help us fight. He's a very experienced player so his arrival is great news for our team.

Edinson Cavani “still hasn’t ticked all the boxes” at Manchester United , says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the experienced striker unable to “live on memory” While Cavani will play no part on Tuesday in the familiar surrounds of Parc des Princes, the likes of Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial are heading

"Of course, Cavani is older, more experienced [than our other strikers], so I'm sure Marcus, Mason and Anthony will learn from him in that position – as they do from Odion Ighalo, too. I watch the more experienced players in my position and I look to see what they're doing, right or wrong, to learn from them.

"I'm sure they [our forwards] will learn from Cavani as well, in the same way they have learnt from Odion and other centre-forwards. He's come to help, to add to the team, and I'm certain he'll contribute a lot."

Tuesday's 2-1 victory over PSG in the Champions League saw Alex Telles make his first appearance for United since joining from Porto.

"He's a great person, I spoke to him shortly before he signed for us," said Fred.

"We had a good chat and he's a really relaxed guy, a good person and a great player. He had a superb season at Porto and has played for other clubs where he did really well.

"I'm convinced he'll add to and help the team and we'll make him very welcome here. I'll be here to help with whatever he needs, together with Bruno [Fernandes] and the other players here who speak good Portuguese. I'm sure they'll help him too, and we'll work towards having a great season together."

CHRIS SUTTON'S PREVIEW: Cavani or Greenwood to partner Rashford? .
CHRIS SUTTON: Someone of Edinson Cavani's stature surely would not sign up to warm the bench. But Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford as two willing runners could work well.Looking at their results this season, you could accuse Mikel Arteta's team of being flat-track bullies. They beat Fulham, Sheffield United and West Ham but lost to Liverpool, Manchester City and Leicester.
