Double or Quits: Vuelta faces back-to-back mountain challenge of Farrapona and Angliru

Double or Quits: Vuelta faces back-to-back mountain challenge of Farrapona and Angliru Contador previous winner on both monster Asturian climbsFirst used in the Vuelta in 1999, the Angliru has long since overtaken the Lagos de Covadonga as the race’s most emblematic climb. Not only is the Angliru widely seen as Spain’s single-most difficult ascent, but over the years, moments like Contador’s victory in 2017, or Robero Heras’ stunning lone win in 2002, or the late Jose María Jiménez’s pursuit of Pavel Tonkov up to the mist-enshrouded summit in 1999, have gradually morphed into hallowed and honoured landmarks in the Vuelta’s collective memory.

The new-look Vuelta a España will be reduced to 18 stages for 2020, and take place from October 20 to November 8, all thanks to the massive Hugh Carthy (EF Pro Cycling) started the showdown on the Alto de Moncalvillo 3.5km from the top of the summit finish, after his teammate Michael Woods

Carthy came into the Vuelta as one of a pack of stage -hunters for EF Pro Cycling alongside the likes of Daniel Martínez, Magnus Cort, and winner of Tuesday’s “I can remember first seeing Hugh Carthy in the early season three or four years ago in some of the smaller races before the Giro and the Tour
