De Sousa had in the quarterfinals surprising the world ranking fourth Michael Smith (England) off, then he beat the Australian Simon Whitlock (no. 20). In the final against Wade (37), de Sousa quickly recovered from a false start (0: 3) and used his first match dart. He threw the maximum number of 180 points 15 times.

Wade had lost the final against fellow countryman Scott Waites in 2010 and against Michael van Gerwen in 2016.
