Richie Stewart grabbed the winner, as Vale of Leven secured a dramatic comeback victory against Annbank in the Soccer Shop Challenge Cup.

Against a side that featured veteran former Dumbarton forward Christian Nade, Vale fell two goals behind early on thanks to Alan Orr’s double - only to put their poor recent form behind them to secure progression to the third round of the tournament at a wet and windy Dam Park.

And gaffer Brian Brown was delighted with the character he saw from his side in the win.

He said: “It was a cracking game and I’d say the best we’ve played since we came back.

“The players showed a fair bit of character after three weeks of bad results, and I couldn’t fault them at all.

“In the first-half Annbank had the wind and put us under a fair bit of pressure. They scored two good goals, but we still created a lot of chances but unfortunately just couldn’t take them.

“We felt a bit of deja vu when it went to 2-0. I was thinking here we go again because things have got away from us in the last few weeks but then it was like the team from last season returned again.

“I know I’ve got a great bunch of guys. We’d had a ropey three weeks, but I’ve had no issues with their commitment. They’ve always kept on trying to play football.

“I can’t fault them at all on Saturday. It was pouring down with rain. They had to get changed outside but they dug in and got the result.

“It also means that we’ve beaten the two teams who were in our league last season so far this year. We just now need to find a way of bridging the gap to the teams who were in the division above.

Why are Manchester United so much better away from home?

Why are Manchester United so much better away from home? The key to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer salvaging Manchester United's Premier League season is improving results at Old Trafford. But how? However, the win over an Everton side that was touted as potential title challengers just a few weeks ago does little to erase the memory of defeats such as those against Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Crystal Palace.

“It’s a big relief getting the win though, because once you start to lose a couple of games you feel as if you’re never going to win again.

“The Whatsapp group was certainly a bit more lively on Saturday night than its been in recent weeks.”

Brown also reserved praise for Lewis King after the midfielder marked his return to action with Vale’s vital first goal - just a minute after the Alexandria side had fallen two behind.

Brown continued: “Lewis being back for us made a huge difference, and although we were without our usual two centre-halves, the boys who came in did a great job.

“Lewis has been a mainstay in recent seasons and we played him in a more advanced role than usual on Saturday, almost as a striker, which worked really well. Especially considering it was the first gametime he’d really had since the friendlies.”

Without a victory in their last three outings, Vale made three changes to the side which had lost narrowly to Wishaw at the Millburn a week previous, with King, Josh Grace and Cameron Smith returning to the starting line-up in place of Darren Boyle, Stephen Griffen and the injured David McNaught.

However they got off to the worst possible start after falling behind inside the opening 20 minutes through Alan Orr’s penalty.

And with the wind at their backs, Robert Love’s side doubled their lead just after the half-hour, when Orr again found the net - this time with a header from a free kick.

However Vale’s response was immediate, with Lewis King rifling home from inside the box.

The goal looked to give the visitors a lift, as they equalised seven minutes into the second period when Chris Jackson headed Robbie Dolan’s cross beyond David Markey.

And the spectacular comeback was complete with 20 minutes remaining, as Lee McGeachy’s pass found Richie Stewart, and he found the net with a left-footed finish.

The result gives Vale a much needed confidence boost, as they prepare to face Johnstone Burgh this weekend on their quest for a first league victory of the season.

And Brown is looking forward to locking horns with a team who they battled for promotion last season.

He added: “Johnstone Burgh will be another really, really tough game, they are coming thick and fast at the moment for us. They were right up there with us last season challenging for promotion.

“But that’s the challenge that we’ve been looking for, we want to face difficult opponents every single week - it was part of the buzz of joining the West of Scotland League.

“I’m hoping that’s us back on track again now.”
