Arsenal had kept some of their players fresh for the league meeting and that ultimately proved to be the difference as the Saints fell to a second successive league defeat.
Armie Hammer breaks silence after quitting Jennifer Lopez movie
Armie Hammer has spoken out following his exit from a movie he was supposed to film with Jennifer Lopez – Shotgun Wedding – plus rumours about his personal life
One player who endured a challenging night was Walcott, who was hoping that he could score against his former club as he did in the meeting at the Emirates Stadium last month. However, on this occasion, the 31-year-old’s finishing abilities and decision-making in the final third were consistently lacking, which prevented him taking advantage of getting into some dangerous positions.
Walcott has been an impressive performer since he made the return to St Mary’s last year, but this was a frustrating evening for him. He failed to record a successful dribble and was also guilty of giving away the ball on nine occasions (Sofascore).

Southampton needed more from him in the final third to get something from the game and he was the only one of their four attacking players not to record a key pass. Also, his meagre total of 13 successful passes was the second lowest of the Saints’ starting XI (Sofascore).
Saints fans react as Tottenham show interest in Danny Ings
A number of Southampton fans have been reacting to a report from Eurosport that Tottenham are monitoring Danny Ings’ contract situation and are prepared to come in with an offer in the summer. The 28-year-old’s long-term future has been up in the air over the last few weeks, with reports having emerged a few months ago that the Saints were hoping to secure a new deal for him and Ryan Bertrand. However, Southampton have since released a concerning financial report which revealed that the club are in debt and have taken out a sizeable loan due to their ongoing financial difficulties.
Saints fans lament Theo Walcott’s performance
Many Southampton fans were left annoyed by Walcott’s poor decision-making and his inability to make the most of the chances which fell his way. There were even a couple of suggestions that he might need to be rested by Hasenhuttl with Nathan Redmond back fit.

Southampton Predicted XI: Arsenal (H)
Southampton host Arsenal for the second time in a matter of just four days tonight, with the Saints aiming to repeat the success they enjoyed against the Gunners in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday.
Ralph Hasenhuttl named a strong side for the visit of Arsenal in the FA Cup and the Saints were able to take advantage of the Gunners making a few changes to their line-up as a result. In the end, an own goal from Gabriel was enough for Southampton to claim a 1-0 win and saw them eliminate the holders of the trophy.
The Saints are having to contend with multiple issues on the injury front, although Hasenhuttl has provided more positive news on the fitness of Jannik Vestergaard, who is now set to return earlier than expected although he is still sidelined for the time being.
The game against Arsenal represents a chance for the Saints to get back to winning ways in the Premier League after back-to-back wins in the FA Cup followed the 2-0 loss at Leicester City. The defeat against the Foxes saw them drop down to mid-table and leaves them needing to get back on track to continue their push for the European places.
It will be interesting to see how the starting line-up changes when Southampton get some of their injured players back to full fitness, but for now Hasenhuttl is limited somewhat in terms of his selection. However, the Saints should be able to name another strong side for the return visit of the Gunners, with just the three changes expected from Saturday’s line-up.
Everton fans vent their frustration in replies to Dominic Calvert-Lewin's tweet
It was a mixed bag of emotions for many loyal Everton fans after last night’s 1-1 stalemate with Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City. Summer signing James Rodriguez stole the show with a scintillating curled effort from just outside of the box finding its way into the back of the net. However, the second half whittled down even the staunchest of optimistic Toffees into frustration as a sloppy error from Jordan Pickford gifted an equaliser to Leicester’s Youri Tielemans. A tight effort navigated through a congested penalty area, but Pickford’s touch was poor and allowed the ball to ricochet into the net.

GK – Alex McCarthy
Hasenhuttl has suggested that Fraser Forster has now established himself as the Saints’ goalkeeper for cup competitions. He kept a third successive clean sheet in the win against Arsenal, having thwarted both Shrewsbury Town and Liverpool in his last two matches.
However, McCarthy remains the club’s number one in the Premier League and you would expect him to come straight back into the side for tonight’s clash.
-
RB – Yann Valery
With Kyle Walker-Peters ruled out through injury, the French right-back should slot into the vacancy left by the ex-Spurs defender.
It would be his first Premier League start of the season, having had just two fleeting substitute appearances earlier this month (Transfermarkt).
-
CB – Jan Bednarek
Bednarek will keep his place in the starting line-up, with the defender looking to continue his excellent form this season and add to the eight clean sheets he has helped the Saints record in the Premier League (Sofascore). He will need to be at his best to help keep out Arsenal.

CB – Jack Stephens
Vestergaard is edging closer to a return, but for now Stephens gets another chance to impress in his absence.
The 26-year-old has helped Southampton record four clean sheets in eight Premier League appearances and deserves credit for the way he has come into the team and performed.
-
LB – Jake Vokins
Ryan Bertrand’s suspension will provide the chance for Vokins to come into the side. The left-back will be given the chance to stake his claim for a more regular starting role.
-
RM – Stuart Armstrong
Armstrong has been a consistent performer for the Saints throughout the season so far and he will once again keep his place in the team down the right wing.
He will be hoping to maintain his form against the Gunners and help to cause problems in the final third.
-
CM – James Ward-Prowse
One of the first names on the team-sheet for the Saints is Ward-Prowse. The midfielder has been in excellent form this campaign and his quality from set pieces and open play will likely prove to be crucial once again.

CM - Ibrahima Diallo
Hasenhuttl is set to face a huge dilemma in the next few weeks, with Oriol Romeu likely to return to the bench tonight after his recent injury.
That means Diallo keeps his place for now, but the 21-year-old will have to continue his impressive recent form to keep his place in the starting line-up long-term.
-
LM - Theo Walcott
Walcott was on the scoresheet when the sides met in the league at the Emirates Stadium last month and he could once again be the key to another victory at St Mary’s.
The ex-Gunner has been a consistent performer since his loan move from Everton and he should be able to cause problems once again here.

ST - Che Adams
At times this season, Adams has gone under the radar, but he has been an effective performer for Southampton and has shown a lot of improvement from last term.
He will hopethat he can cause plenty of problems for Arsenal’s defence with his runs in behind.
