The Lowdown: Who’s in the hunt?

A number of bosses have been loosely linked with the position, including Frank Lampard and Rafael Benitez, but it seems as if Eddie Howe is the man who Dermot Desmond wants in Glasgow.

Howe actually met Desmond for talks in April (via The Sun) and a deal was thought to be edging closer, but things have since become more complicated due to issues over who would fill the Director of Football position – Howe wanted Richard Hughes to follow him from Bournemouth – while Premier League interest has also thrown a spanner in the works, even leading the Hoops to look elsewhere at the likes of Roy Keane (via Football Insider).

Howe does seem to still be leading the race despite all the complications though, as reliable reporter Alan Nixon has provided an update on the situation.

The Latest: Howe is still Celtic’s man

Indeed, the former Bournemouth boss had reportedly verbally agreed on a move to Parkhead before having second thoughts.

However, recent reports (via The Scottish Sun) seem more positive regarding a Celtic Park switch, with Howe thought to be finalising his backroom staff.

Nixon, who writes for The Sun, was asked by a Celtic fan this week what the hold-up is on Howe.

He replied on Twitter, admitting the coaches he wants are under contract with his former employers.

“Same thing. Coaches he wants tied in at Bournemouth right now.”

The Verdict: McKay may hope Bournemouth don’t go up

New Celtic CEO Dominic McKay may well be hoping Bournemouth don’t earn promotion back to the Premier League via the playoffs over the coming weeks, as it could impact their deal for Howe.

Reliable journalist drops Celtic manager search revelation, it’s good news for Desmond - opinion In a frest twist to Celtic's manager hunt, Richard Hughes is not key to any deal involving Eddie Howe.Dermot Desmond has held talks with a few managers but the Bhoys are no closer to announcing the Northern Irishman’s successor.

Cherries coaches Stephen Purches and Stephen Weatherstone are two men who are reportedly wanted by Howe, but should they secure an immediate return to the top-flight, they will earn pay rises, and we feel it is hard to believe they would want to leave a newly promoted Premier League side.

It would make them more expensive for Celtic in regards to wages and possible compensation deals, so really, McKay and the rest of the Hoops hierarchy could be supporting Brentford, Barnsley and Swansea City over the coming weeks.
