Alan Shearer has urged Harry Kane to leave Tottenham if he wants to win trophies and feels the club's desperately disappointing season has given their star man an 'excuse' to move on despite him having three years left on his contract.

The 27-year-old - who has been heavily linked with a big-money summer move to Manchester United - is currently the Premier League's top scorer this season with 21 goals, taking his overall tally in the competition to 164, which puts him seventh on the all-time list.

However, Spurs have struggled this season, with Jose Mourinho getting the boot last month after a run of one win in six games that included an embarrassing Europa League exit at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb.

The appointment of club favourite Ryan Mason wasn't enough to stop Manchester City dominating them in the Carabao Cup final, with Saturday's 3-1 loss to Leeds ending any realistic hopes of Champions League football next season.

Speaking on Match of the Day after the defeat at Elland Road, Shearer likened the circumstances surrounding his move from Blackburn to Newcastle to those now facing Kane, whose current deal expires in 2024.

'When I left Blackburn, I had a season after we won the title and we were nowhere near winning the title,' the Premier League's record goalscorer said.

'That sort of made my mind up as I then wanted to go on and try and do things, so if Harry wants an excuse, then Tottenham and that team are giving him one.

'They didn't show up in the cup final and they didn't show up (against Leeds). If I was in his position, I'd go and look elsewhere to try and win trophies.'

It was reported at the weekend that Kane would not submit a transfer request to Daniel Levy - but would implore the club chairman to let him go at the right price, with the Red Devils preparing a £90million bid for the striker as the future of Edinson Cavani remains uncertain.

'Individual awards are great, they are fantastic achievements,' he said last month after becoming Footballer of the Year at the London Football Awards.

'When I look back at the end of my career, I will go over it and take in a little bit more. The goal right now as a player is to win team trophies.

'It is one of those (situations), it is bittersweet. I would rather be winning team trophies and this award. It is what it is.'

Tottenham are seventh as it stands, which would only be enough to qualify for the UEFA Conference League, Europe's new third-tier club competition kicking off next season.

Their final three games this season see them host Wolves and Aston Villa before a final-day trip to the King Power Stadium to face Leicester.
