Jon Newsome believes that Norwich City target Angus Gunn needs to play regularly if he is moving to the Canaries this summer.

Gunn has been heavily linked with a return to the Canaries after his loan spell at the club in 2017/18.

The Athletic reports that the Southampton goalkeeper is on the verge of a return to Norwich, in a deal that the Saints hope will eventually cost £7m.

Norwich will pay an initial fee of £2.5m and strengthen their ranks in goal, with Gunn set to compete with Tim Krul for the No.1 jersey.

Newsome, though, believes that he needs to play regularly if he is to be a success with the Canaries.

Former Norwich star Jon Newsome doubts a potential deal to sign goalkeeper Angus Gunn will happen this summer , despite understanding why a move is being mooted. Gunn spent the 2017/18 season on loan at the Canaries from Manchester City, coming third in the Player of the Season vote. The Canaries finished 14th in the Championship that season but since then, Gunn has moved permanently to Southampton for a fee of £13.5m. However, he fell out of favour and was loaned to Stoke City for the 2020/21 season.

(=It’s possible, but I am not sure.) I’m going to Denmark next September. We use may or might for things that will possibly happen in the future, but we are not too sure . It’s like a prediction about something that we think perhaps will happen. The economy might suffer a global recession next year.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, the former Canaries star said: “Whether he’ll go in there to fight for the No.1 jersey remains to be seen. I would have thought he’s had a bit of a stop-start season with Stoke, he wasn’t a regular all the way through the season, so I think at the age that he is, the most important thing for Angus Gunn at this moment in time would be to play regular football.

“Does Norwich City offer him that? I’m not too sure it does.”

Gunn made a total of 51 appearances for Norwich during his loan spell and spent last season on loan at Stoke City, though he played just 15 times in the Championship throughout 2020/21.
