ESPN pundit Jan Aage Fjortoft doesn’t think that Sergio Ramos is a good fit for Manchester United – but has not ruled out a move for him, either.

It was confirmed last week that the 35-year-old defender would leave Real Madrid after 16 years at the club, during which time he pretty much won everything that can be won both at club level and internationally, some of them multiple times over.

Now, though, he is set to look for a new club to take on the next challenge in his career, with French outlet RMC (via GFFN) having claimed that Manchester United, along with Sevilla and Paris Saint-Germain, are potentially looking at signing him this summer.

But speaking on ESPN FC, Fjortoft felt that whilst signing a veteran defender isn’t impossible for them to do, noting Chelsea’s signing of Thiago Silva last summer, he didn’t think that the Spaniard would fit in well with Manchester United because of who he would have to play with:

“I think they could [sign him], and we saw that with Thiago Silva and Chelsea as well, I mean that kind of deal is possible.

“I think that Sergio Ramos has got to play with someone next to him that is quick, I think that is important, although I’m not saying he is very, very slow, but playing with [Raphael] Varane is something else than playing with [Harry] Maguire. So I think that he could struggle at Manchester United. But they need to do something.”

At the age of 35 and coming off a season that was troubled with injury, even with all that he has accomplished in his career, it might be foolish to suggest that Ramos would be coming to Old Trafford to be the main man at Manchester United and for the defence to be built around him.

So it shouldn’t matter too much about what players he would have to play next to on a weekly basis, more than likely he would be used sparingly and saved for the big, important games where they would look for his leadership skills to help see them through such as those in the Champions League so that they can avoid being dumped out in the group stages once again or falling short if they were to reach another final.
