Larne have Euro template to finish job against Aarhus - Davy McDaid The Inver Reds will take a 2-1 lead to Denmark next week when they renew rivalries with AGF Aarhus in the Europa Conference League on Thursday night. And McDaid, who bagged an early opener at Inver Park, believes the harbour men are equipped to cause another shock in next week’s return leg at the Aarhus Stadium. “We are solid at the back and we can also create chances, so I believe we’re well set up for Europe, particularly away from home,” he said. “I don’t think anyone would have given us a chance going into these games, but there’s a great belief in the group.

Not that Hughes and his team-mates did much wrong against Bala on their European debut. Larne fans have been told to beware a couple of dangermen in Thursday night’s Europa Conference League showdown with Aarhus at Inver Park.

Tiernan Lynch’s men are aiming to make it three straight wins in Europe following back-to-back 1-0 victories over Bala Town of Wales in the first round of the competition.

It’ll be a big ask against an Aarhus side who finished fourth in the Superliga last season and are odds on with the bookies to progress to next month's third stage.

“Aarhus also recently signed a Polish striker called Dawid Kurminowski from a Slovakian club called MSK Zilina.

“Kurminowski was the overall top goal scorer in the Slovakian top division last season and people have big expectations for him here.”

WHAT DO DANISH FANS KNOW OF LARNE?

“Very little, to be honest. I spoke to the manager of Aarhus and he suggested that it didn’t really matter if it was Larne or Bala Town who progressed to this round.

“With all due respect, he is of the opinion that Aarhus should expect to beat Larne if they want to live up to their own high expectations in the competition.”

HOW HAVE AARHUS DONE IN THE DANISH LEAGUE IN RECENT SEASONS?

“They finished fourth last season and third the season before that, but for a number of years they didn’t perform well. They have been relegated a number of times since 2000.”

HAVE THEY WON THE DANISH LEAGUE TITLE?

“They were last crowned champions in 1986 and they also won several league titles in the 1950s when they were a really big club in Denmark.

“They were also one of the biggest clubs here in the 1980s when they won their last league title. They also played in a lot of big European ties in both the 1970s and 1980s.”

ANY EUROPEAN HIGHLIGHTS SPRING TO MIND?

“Well, Aarhus played Bayern Munich in the old UEFA Cup in 1979 (they lost 5-2 on aggregate) and also knocked Nantes out of the UEFA Cup in 1997.

“The Aarhus goalkeeper Lars Windfeld performed so well in a 1-0 win over Nantes in France that L’Equipe (French newspaper) gave him a perfect 10 out of 10 rating.

“Only 11 players in the history of L’Equipe have managed to get a perfect 10, so Lars is up there with Lionel Messi and those types of guys.”
