The legendary Roger Federer admitted he was disappointed after confirming he will miss the Laver Cup. Federer has been battling injuries for the last two seasons with his knees being a particularly frustrating and recurring issue.

The Swiss star announced back in August that he underwent further knee surgery after sustaining another injury during the grass court season.

He suggested he would be off the tour for months as he targeted a return to the tour in 2022.

Federer's recovery from his injury has meant the 20-time Grand Slam winner will miss the Laver Cup, an annual tournament pitting the best male European players against the rest of the world.

"Look, I'm disappointed. I'm going to miss the guys, I'm going to miss the team, the spirit, the fans, the weekend, just everything that goes with it - cheering on my fellow players," the 40-year-old admitted.

"I'm going to miss it because I had a wonderful time in Geneva, Prague and Chicago, but have already been in touch with Thomas Enqvist, the coach of Team Europe and I will also definitely call Bjorn and John and make sure everything is ok and obviously I'll be in touch with the team and I'll be watching a lot of the matches.

"It's going to be long tennis days in front of the TV, so I'm really excited that it's Laver Cup time again."

Federer joins fellow legends Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic on the sidelines for the event in Boston - and he called for leaders to step up.

"I think Team Europe will be again the favourites and I think having Sascha Zverev as Olympic Champion and Daniil Medvedev as the US Open champion on the team it's going to be really good for us, especially for the singles," Federer continued.

"I think doubles indoors - anything is possible to be honest. I think it's going to be close in the doubles. In the singles we have slight edge but they have a lot of young players on Team World, so I think a lot will be possible for them but it's amazing how strong Team Europe has become over the years, also smaller nations being really dominant.

"But, you know, no Rafa, no Novak, no me on the team, so I think they will need a new leader or Bjorn Borg is obviously just going to take over as the captain, the super captain, the king.

"I really hope that Team Europe of course is going to win again."

Despite missing out on Boston, Federer is eyeing a return to the international circuit with the Laver Cup in 2022.

Next year's edition of the tournament will be played at the O2 Arena in London - a venue Federer knows well after winning the ATP Tour Finals there in 2010 and 2011.

"Very exciting that it's going to be in London at the O2 Arena - the Laver Cup in 2022," Federer added.

"I think it's going to be an amazing event over there in a great arena that knows only the best acts, all the superstars go to London and I think Laver Cup has a superstar potential and power to be honest to bring the best players in the world there now that the world tour finals have left to Turin.

"It opens up the opportunity for the Laver Cup to go to London - and I hope the tennis fans will be happy to see the Laver Cup going there and I think it's going to be a fantastic event.

"Personally of course I hope to be back, also I'm working hard to play in those big stadiums again and the O2 Arena in London is one of them."

The Laver Cup is set to be played at the TD Garden in Boston, USA from 24-26 September.
