Carney: Arsenal side to beat in WSL; Smith shocked at perfect start

Carney: Arsenal side to beat in WSL; Smith shocked at perfect start Arsenal have been transformed into the team to beat in the Women's Super League under the stewardship of Jonas Eidevall, according to Karen Carney. Eidevall took the reins just two months before the start of the 2021/22 season following Joe Montemurro's departure but has defied expectation and taken his new team to new heights. © Getty The Gunners boast a 100 per cent record at the five-game mark and sit three points clear of Chelsea at the top of the WSL, and Carney believes Arsenal's fast start could prove decisive in this season's title race.

Thomas Frank has insisted that he is “insanely happy” at Premier League newcomers Brentford even though he is flattered by reports linking him to Arsenal.

Frank has been Brentford boss since 2018. He stepped in to replace Dean Smith, who left the club to join Aston Villa.

The 47-year-old led them to the Championship play-off final in 2018/19. They missed out on promotion to the Premier League as Fulham beat them at Wembley.

The Bees made this right last season as they got the better of Swansea City to earn promotion via the play-offs.

'Phenomenal' Martinez back to haunt Arsenal

'Phenomenal' Martinez back to haunt Arsenal Emiliano Martinez returns to Arsenal as one of the best 'keepers in the top flight and determined to show his former club they made a mistake letting him go.It is just over 12 months since Martinez, 29, surprised many, including his own family, by opting to leave the club he had been at since the age of 17 and try something new in the Midlands.

Brentford have made a strong start to the new Premier League season. They have three wins, three draws and just one defeat.

This start leaves them seventh in the Premier League after seven games. The Express reported last month that Arsenal were interested in Frank should they decide to part with Mikel Arteta.

Frank has told Danish outlet Bold that despite these reports, he is “insanely happy” at Brentford:

“So, I understand that well, but… Arsenal and Man United. Wasn’t that how it was? I think I read that at some point,” Frank said.

“It’s very nice, but one thing is rumours, and the other is if they really wanted to contact me. Then we have to take it from there.

“I have a contact until 2023. I’m insanely happy at Brentford. [They are a] club that means a lot to me and where I have had great times.

“I enjoy working with our director of football, owners, players, staff and fans.

“It’s the club who must come to me, but now we must see what the future brings. I know we have a mutual respect and a good relationship with each other on that.”

Elsewhere, Ray Parlour has predicted that Arsenal will miss out on the top four this season:

“Arsenal are not going to be in the top four this season, they’re competing for fifth and sixth.

“They’re still in the hunt alongside Everton, West Ham, Spurs. West Ham are flying at the moment. I’ve had a bet that Arsenal will finish above both West Ham and Spurs.

“I think they’ll have a good season and I think you have to give Mikel Arteta time.

“It’s a situation where they’ve got to keep investing, they’ve invested a lot of money in the summer, whether it’s the right investment [remains to be seen]. I think the back four will be very important.

“I was with [former Arsenal manager] George Graham yesterday. If this Arsenal team can get that back four right like it was in his era, get the goalkeeper right. If you can keep the current back four fit and keep it solid. He might have a chance this year, Arteta.”
