Back four, hybrid system, Ward support - What we've noticed from Huddersfield Town's pre-season

Back four, hybrid system, Ward support - What we've noticed from Huddersfield Town's pre-season Pre-season games are over, what do Huddersfield Town look like right now under Danny Schofield going into the season? For reference here, Jan Siewert guided Town to four wins and two draws in pre-season in 2019 and we know how that turned out. Carlos Corberan lost 2-1 to Fleetwood with a strong side ten days before the 2021/22 campaign started and ended up at Wembley. Even David Wagner’s Terriers won four and drew two before the 2018/19 season - the one we don't talk about where they finished with only 16 points and were bottom from Boxing Day.

Danny Schofield revealed that Huddersfield Town are likely to look to the transfer market for a new centre-back after losing Matty Pearson to a foot injury for the next several months, while new midfield signing David Kasumu worryingly limped off after coming on as a late substitute against Burnley on Friday night.

Pearson suffered his injury early on in a pre-season friendly against Bolton last weekend and was seen walking around the John Smith’s Stadium using crutches and wearing a protective boot.

Schofield had indicated ahead of the opening day defeat to Burnley that Pearson was ‘a doubt’, but after the 0-1 defeat at the John Smith’s Stadium he confirmed that the prognosis does not look good.

The head coach said: “Matty Pearson has a foot injury so he’s going to be on the sidelines for a significant period.” Pressed for a more specific timescale, he responded: “I think it’s going to be a good few months.”

Rarmani Edmonds-Green started alongside Tom Lees against Burnley, with Schofield saying: “It’s a big blow losing Matty Pearson as a character and as a player, he’s massive for this team. But Rams came in today and it was a big opportunity for him, and I think he did well.”

Town suffered a further potential injury blow as Kasumu lasted just 17 minutes on his debut, replacing Jon Russell in the 72nd minute only to have to go back off for Jordan Rhodes in the 89th.
