Instagram outage forces millions to look directly at the world for nearly half an hour

Instagram outage forces millions to look directly at the world for nearly half an hour Photo-sharing app and social network Instagram was briefly taken offline on Monday afternoon, causing nothing of consequence to occur other than a brief respite from one source of the constant deluge of inconsequential information to which we all voluntarily submit ourselves.

Messaging platform Telegram claims to have had a surge in signups during a period of downtime for Facebook ’s rival messaging services. In a message sent to his Telegram channel, founder Pavel Durov’s just wrote: “I see 3 million new users signed up for Telegram within the last 24 hours.”

Three million new users have signed up to Telegram over the past 24 hours, during a period in which Facebook (and Facebook Messenger), Instagram, and WhatsApp were all experiencing significant outages worldwide. The new users were announced by Telegram ’s founder and CEO Pavel Durov

Telegram may have made big gains during the Facebook outage.

Facebook's loss may be Telegram's gain.

The rival messaging service's founder said on Thursday that people flocked there during the long Facebook outage impacting that platform, its own messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram.

"I see 3 million new users signed up for Telegram within the last 24 hours," Telegram boss CEO Pavel Durov wrote. "Good. We have true privacy and unlimited space for everyone."

Telegram reported that it had 200 million active users this time last year, so Wednesday's gain is a reasonable jump for the service. It was banned in Russia, Durov's home country, last April, sparking protests on the streets of Moscow.

Telegram didn't immediately respond to a request for further comment.

Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp restored after one of longest outages in Facebook history.
After a long delay, the social network began coming back to life Wednesday night. Facebook never said what caused the outage.
