Nintendo Online network servers are currently down across the globe for Nintendo Switch players, as the company's Japanese Twitter confirm that its services have "failed" since the early hours of this morning.

The official statement comes after thousands of Nintendo Switch players began reporting an "Error code 2813-0990" when attempting to access the Nintendo eShop, play online games, or download updates to existing games in their library.

While Nintendo hasn't specified the cause of the downtime, it's potentially because a sharp spike in online traffic due to self-isolation measures imposed around the globe in response to the spread of the COVID-19 disease are the cause.

No plans for new Switch this year - Nintendo

No plans for new Switch this year - Nintendo Nintendo CEO and president Shuntaro Furukawa told investors today that the company has “no plans” to launch a new model of the Switch in 2020. Speaking as part of a corporate management policy briefing following yesterday’s release of financial results, Furukawa instead pointed to today’s announcement of the new Animal Crossing-branded model. “According to the conventional wisdom for dedicated video game platforms, Nintendo Switch should be entering the midway phase of the hardware lifecycle,” Furukawa said. “But we believe we have built a foundation on which we can pursue further growth opportunities for Nintendo Switch.

The Nintendo Switch Online service has been live for over a year now – though even then it was late to the game. Rival services like Xbox Live or PlayStation Plus had been going for years previously, offering a host of online benefits to Switch owners who subscribe for a monthly or annual fee on top

March 10, or Mario Day (MAR10... get it?) wasn't invented by Nintendo, and it's not tied to the company's marketing, but that didn't stop everyone from declaring today the magical Italian plumber's unofficial holiday. Of course you know Mario appears in over 50 games under his own moniker (and often alongside his twin brother, Luigi). But he has also had clever cameos in tons of other Nintendo games, many that have since been forgotten. So on Mario's Day, dust off your old consoles -- here are some games you might not have known Mario is involved with.

The Xbox Live servers have also been struggling in recent days, for instance, and Xbox head Phil Spencer has confirmed on Twitter that this is the result of a sudden influx of players logging online as they stay indoors.

The good news is that Nintendo is actively addressing the situation, and is currently asking its players to "please wait for a while until recovery", though it's unclear how long "for a while" will be.

With the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons just days away, here's hoping that the company can get things back and running online before thousands of new villagers starting aching to visit each other's islands. We'll keep you updated once we hear anything more.
