If you want a Tesla, you first have to be able to afford it. The cheapest car, the Model 3, currently costs an impressive 42,900 euros (list price). For an Model S or an Model X , not even 75,000 euros are enough. Means: Average earners have to save a lot to put a Tesla in the garage. Even then, it will probably not be enough for low earners. This also means: Tesla will initially be largely reserved for large earners. But there aren't that many of them.

Tesla boss Elon Musk has recognized the problem. And promises improvement. "It is important to make the [Tesla] car affordable," he said on Wednesday in an interview with investors and analysts. He currently cares most that Tesla cars are not cheap enough. "We have to fix that."

The employee was initially hired for the energy department, but moved to the solar product division shortly after completing his apprenticeship and was then transferred to the automotive division.

A former service technician who left the company earlier this year says he liked that Tesla paid him and his colleagues an hour, not an order. Because that allows the technicians to make customers happy instead of doing unnecessary repairs.

“When I started at Tesla, I was very happy that the company paid us hourly because they wanted the cars to be treated properly the first time,” he says.

A vehicle manufacturing worker who still works there says he was surprised when he got in six years ago when Tesla put his Model S to manual labor.

"When I started, we built ten, 25 cars a day," he says. "We did a lot by hand."

Since then, the production numbers have increased massively. In 2013 the company delivered 22,477 cars, compared to 245,240 last year.
