Olympic legend Dame Kelly Holmes has closed her quaint village cafe business after it racked up hundreds of thousands of pounds of debt.

The double-gold medal winner's Café 1809 served its last cup of coffee on Sunday morning after four years' trading.

Her cafe had amassed £295,695 in debt at the end of 2017, its accounts on Companies House show.

Staff have started to sell items from the cafe on Facebook.

The day before, a post on her business's Facebook page said: "Cafe 1809 will be closing its door as a cafe with the last trading day being 25th November 2018.

"Just now my daughter Abigail, who is 9, begged me to take her to Dame Kelly Holmes Cafe called 1809 as she is inspired by her," wrote Tony Lewis on Facebook.

"I've broken the sad news that the cafe is closing. We will still make the journey over before it shuts, we never know Abi might even meet one of her heroes. I wish you all the best in whatever you do," he added.

Plans to open a pop-up space

Dame Kelly, 48, who grew up in the village, said that she wanted to pursue other ambitions and "bring a new energy into my life and the village".

She revealed other business plans, including one to create a new pop-up space.

“We will be opening again but as a different venture, providing space and a place for events, pop ups, community gatherings and more," she wrote on Twitter.

The retired middle distance runner, who won two gold medals in Athens in 2004, closed a sister branch of the café in Gravesend, Kent, three months after it opened in June 2017.
