Boris Johnson was last night criticised for spending thousands of pounds of taxpayers’ money on new furniture – because his estranged wife has kept his belongings.

Just days before his expected move into No 10, The Mail on Sunday can reveal that Mr Johnson is to receive free furnishings – including a new bed – after telling civil servants he ‘didn’t have any stuff’. His girlfriend, Carrie Symonds, is understood to have made it clear that none of her furniture – including a wine-stained sofa at the centre of the couple’s domestic row – will be taken to Downing Street.

Previous Prime Ministers have billed the taxpayer for renovations to the property, but not for ‘fixtures and fittings’.

Theresa May is understood to have already moved her furniture back to her constituency home in Maidenhead.

Last night, former Liberal Democrat Cabinet Minister Sir Ed Davey said he was writing to the Cabinet Office to demand to know how much had been spent on Mr Johnson’s furniture.

Boris plots early election to crush Labour 'while Jeremy Corbyn is still around' with aides tasked with getting Britain to the polls soon after Brexit is sorted The Tory frontrunner, who will become the UK's new Prime Minister next week if he defeats Jeremy Hunt in the leadership race, is said to have told aides to prepare for an election as early as next summer. The next election is not due until 2022, but the government's instability over recent months has prompted frequent speculation of an early poll. Speaking to The Times, Boris aides said the Tories wanted to exploit the 'groundwork' they had already done for a campaign against Mr Corbyn. 'There's a desire to get this done while Corbyn is still around.

‘Theresa May did and she has never earned anything like as much as Boris Johnson. Rather than wine stains, he should be worried about the stain he is making on British politics.

‘The late Alan Clark might have looked down on politicians who bought their own furniture but these days I think voters expect it.’

The result of the Tory leadership contest will be announced on Tuesday, with allies quietly confident that Mr Johnson will beat Jeremy Hunt, the Foreign Secretary, by a two-to-one margin.

Mr Johnson is expected to appoint his senior ministerial team on Wednesday evening, ahead of his Cabinet’s first meeting on Thursday morning.

It is understood Mr Johnson has yet to make his mind up over many of the biggest jobs, although former nemesis Michael Gove is tipped for a promotion from Environment to Communities Secretary or a move to Northern Ireland – a clear signal from Mr Johnson that he intends to ‘heal the rifts’ which have opened up in the Tory Party since the 2016 referendum.

There were conflicting claims yesterday about whether Ms Symonds would be joining Mr Johnson in No 10, with one report saying they were on the brink of becoming the first unmarried couple to live in the official residence – while another suggested they had separated.

The couple have bought a £1.3 million property in South London together, but this newspaper understands that although Ms Symonds is not due to join Mr Johnson in No 10 at the outset, that could change ‘if she thinks that is the best way to support him’.

Friends said they were still in a relationship, and she was by his side at his family’s house in the Oxfordshire countryside as he planned his appointments.

Mr Johnson’s wife Marina has remained in the former marital home with their four children – and his furniture.

Another flashpoint during the transition of power has been over Mr Johnson’s use of Chequers, the Prime Minister’s grace-and-favour country home in Buckinghamshire.

Mrs May was forced to abandon plans to shut the house immediately after her departure to carry out renovation works after protests from Mr Johnson. Under the plan, the Grade I-listed 16th Century manor house would have been closed until at least November, denying Mr Johnson and Ms Symonds its use over the summer.

A source said: ‘It was made clear that this would look like a spiteful act by the outgoing PM.’

During last month’s domestic row, which was recorded by Ms Symonds’ neighbours in South London, she was heard claiming Mr Johnson had ruined a sofa with red wine, yelling: ‘You just don’t care for anything because you’re spoilt. You have no care for money or anything.’

When David Cameron moved into Downing Street in 2010, he carried out a ‘Notting Hill-style’ overhaul of the kitchen and bathroom in the four-bedroomed flat – which sits above No 11 Downing Street – and installed a second kitchen.

Some £30,000 of the costs were met from public funds, with the rest of the bill being footed by the Camerons. Officials stressed that none of the £30,000 was spent on furniture, fittings or accessories.

A source close to Mr Johnson declined to reveal the size of the bill for the furniture.

A Downing Street spokesman declined to comment.

US airport security discover ‘souvenir’ missile launcher in passenger’s checked luggage.
A man has been stopped by airport security in the US because he had a missile launcher in his luggage. The traveller had placed the military grade weapon in his checked baggage when flying from Kuwait to Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall Airport in Maryland. The passenger told airport staff he wanted to keep the missile launcher as a “souvenir”. Security staff contacted airport police who detained the man for questioning. He told them he was a military worker and was coming home from Kuwait. The weapon was turned over to the state fire marshal for safe disposal, officials said.
