A horde of youths have been caught on camera storming a supermarket and assaulted two staff during a rampage through the store.

The youngsters caused havoc in the Aldi store in Edgbaston Road, Birmingham, trashing stock and furnishings before attacking the employees.

The staff who were involved suffered minor injuries in the incident which happened just after 7.30pm on Tuesday.

Cops are probing to see if the supermarket attack is linked to a large gathering in nearby Cannon Hill Park, where a water fight ended in a punch-up, two hours earlier.

The man, 44, was tackled by supermarket staff before being taken into police custody for questioning. A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "The suspect was initially detained by brave members of staff and public, before he was arrested by officers who were quickly on scene.

Worried witnesses reported the fight to police and up to 10 patrol cars were sent to the scene at around 5.20pm.

A 16-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assaulting police officers and a security guard and remained in custody on Wednesday morning, July 24, BirminghamLive reports.

A second 16-year-old was taken to hospital with a hand injury and was due to be voluntarily interviewed by officers.

Large amounts of youths remained at the popular family park, which is also the home of the Midlands Arts Centre, after the fist fight.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “Police were called to the Aldi store on Edgbaston Road in Birmingham just after 7.30pm yesterday (Tuesday 23 July) to a report of criminal damage.

“It is believed a large group of youths entered the store and caused damage to stock and furnishings as well as assaulting two members of staff, causing them minor injuries.”

A spokeswoman for Aldi said: “We’re unable to comment on the incident as it’s an ongoing police investigation.”

A witness commented on Facebook that “Aldi was absolutely trashed” with “windows smashed, doors kicked off their hinges” and “staff assaulted.”

However, the store was open for business as usual the following day.
