A warning has been issued for heavy rain and thunderstorms across Northern Ireland this weekend.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain from midnight tonight right through Friday, August 9.

They warned a band of heavy rain followed by heavy showers or thunderstorms has the potential to bring disruption.

In their warning, the Met Office also said there was a chance to expect:

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life
  • Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads

A forecaster for the Met Office said: "A band of heavy rain, with the possibility of some very heavy bursts, will move northwards during Thursday night and Friday. Within this band 10-15 mm is widely expected, however some places could see as much as 30 mm in just a few hours.

There is a weather warning across Scotland, England and Wales for Saturday as well but that has not been expanded to Northern Ireland yet.

Met Office issues weather warning for thunderstorms for Wales.
The yellow warning, which is in place until 8pm, predicts heavy showers, thunderstorms, flooding and disruption in a few places. The main places affected in Wales are Cardiff, Newport, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Bridgend, Neath Port Talbot, Merthyr Tydfil, Caerphilly, Vale of Glamorgan, Newport, Monmouthshire, Torfaen and Blaenau Gwent. © Met Office Weather warning for thunderstorms issued in Wales on Sunday This comes off the back of weather warnings in Wales for rain and wind on Friday and Saturday. A spokesman from the Met Office said lightning and hail is likely with 10-20mm of rainfall in an hour.
