Murder Case, a harrowing new documentary which follows a police team in Scotland investigating the murder of Julie Reilly, is set to air on BBC Two.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Bell, Police Scotland's senior investigating officer, and his team attempt to work out what has happened to the 47-year-old grandmother, who went missing in Glasgow in 2018.

The investigation takes a sinister turn when two of her leg bones are discovered near her home in Govan, and the story ends with a conviction a year later.

When will Murder Case air on TV?

Episode 1 of Murder Case will be broadcast on BBC Two at 9pm on 14 August.

The following episodes in this three-part series will air at 9pm on 15 August and at 9pm on Wednesday 21 August.

Each episode is an hour long.

What can viewers expect from the series?

The docu-drama will give a rare all-access look behind the scenes of an escalating and extraordinarily brutal crime. Cameras will follow the police team as they put out a missing persons request and begin to search for Ms Reilly in the first episode.

In the second episode, once detectives realise who their main suspect is, we see them pain stakingly gathering evidence and putting their case together in order to charge a local butcher, Stephen Wallace, with Ms Reilly's murder.

The second series of The Last Kingdom continues at 9.00pm on BBC 2 on Thursday May 4 with the eigth and final episode. Netflix, who co-produce the series , will be streaming the episode on the same day to various countries outside the UK. After the season ends it will be available to buy on Blu-Ray

The third and final episode follows the detectives as they piece together the clues available to them that leads to Wallace's eventual conviction.

What happened to Julie Reilly and Stephen Wallace?

If you don't want to know what happened to Reilly and her killer ahead of viewing the documentary, look away now.

Ms Reilly had a brain injury, which caused her complex issus with her reaction times, her speech and her memory.

Wallace befriended her, and she allowed him to stay with her in her home after he split up with his girlfriend in December 2017.

Wallace told her he would take care of her. Instead, he brutally ended her life, cutting her limbs off with a knife and removing her remains from the house in plastic bags and suitcases.

Man accused of stabbing pensioner (93) at his home A man is accused of seriously assaulting a 93-year-old pensioner by stabbing him three times in the abdomen and once in the hand. James Reilly (30) allegedly assaulted the elderly man in the garden of his home in Co Louth last Saturday.

It was a real-life mystery that could have come straight from the pages of a modern-day detective novel. Further examination found DNA contamination on several other mortuary instruments but it was only ever going to present a problem when it came to fingernail scissors.

He would later tell a friend that the suitcases were full of deer meat he was trying to sell after he'd hit an animal driving in his car. Another was told the bags were full of dirty washing for Ms Reilly to take care of.

The last recorded sighting of Ms Reilly was on 6 February 2018. Thinking her missing, her family made an emotional plea to the public for her safe return.

Two months later, on 19 April, a member of the public found a bone with flesh attached in his front garden in Ardshiel Road.

Another thigh bone was discovered near Reilly's home, sparking a murder investigation, which eventually lead to Wallace being arrested and charged.

An apparent burial site at Drumoyne Drive was also found by a member of the public.

To start with, Wallace denied the charges, but later pled guilty at the High Court in Glasgow in February, and was handed a mandatory life sentence of 28 years.

It also emerges in the series that Wallace had killed before: he murdered a woman when he was just 15 years old in 1992.
