Heavy rain could cause severe disruption across parts of the UK this weekend, meteorologists have warned.

The Met Office has released a 'severe' yellow weather warning for persistent, slow-moving downpours, strong winds and potential flooding on Friday evening and Saturday morning (30th and 31st August).

Much of Scotland, particularly the western and central hills, are affected by the warning, along with Northern Ireland. The far north-west of England will also see heavy rain over the next 24 hours with temperatures dropping to around 12˚C.

Meteorologists say "flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely", while spray from surface water on roads will impact on journey times.

The forecast is in stark contrast to last weekend's heatwave when temperature records were broken in the south-east of England when the mercury hit 33˚C at Heathrow.

Elsewhere, southern and central England and Wales should enjoy a relatively dry 24 hours with breezy, sunny spells.

Sunday will bring sunshine and showers across the UK. Monday is set to be dry after a chilly start, but Tuesday brings breezy and cloudy weather with rain mainly in the west.
