Labour Conference Set To Water Down Radical 'Green New Deal' Climate Plan Radical plans to commit Labour to cutting UK greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2030 are expected to be watered down at the party’s annual conference, HuffPost UK can reveal. Jeremy Corbyn will make tackling global warming a centrepiece of the gathering in Brighton, with a whole day devoted for the first time to the issue of the climate emergency. But Corbyn and shadow chancellor John McDonnell are also determined to draft a credible policy that balances jobs in poor communities with the need to take more urgent action than the Tories and other parties have promised, insiders said.

Jeremy Corbyn tonight saw off a Brexit rebellion as Labour members voted to keep the party neutral for several more months despite a pro-Remain insurgency.

Labour's policy on Brexit will now be decided at a special conference after the next election. It comes after a bruising stand-off within the party, as activists clashed with the unions over whether to campaign to stay in the EU for good.

Activists at the annual Labour conference in Brighton backed Mr Corbyn's preferred plan, which will see the party keep its options open until after a new deal is negotiated with Brussels. A rival motion, committing Labour to a pro-Remain stance, was narrowly defeated amid chaotic scenes as party bosses refused to hold a formal paper ballot on the issue following an informal show of hands.

If Labour wins the next general election, the party will hold a referendum on EU membership within six months. Before polling day, Mr Corbyn will summon a special conference of members to work out whether to push for a Remain outcome, or stay neutral in the campaign.

'Disappointed'

Keir Starmer, the shadow Brexit Secretary, said he was "disappointed" by the decision not to back EU membership immediately but predicted: "I think it's very likely that the members will want us to campaign for Remain."

Pro-EU MPs rounded on the leadership in the wake of the Brexit vote. Wes Streeting told i: "Labour conference has agreed Jeremy Corbyn’s Brexit policy, Jeremy Corbyn’s manifesto and Jeremy Corbyn’s pitch to the country. Success or failure now rides on Jeremy Corbyn. It’s down to him." Ben Bradshaw said the farcical conclusion to the debate was "strange and worrying".

Throughout the course of the day delegates clashed on the conference stage over the policy. In her speech Emily Thornberry, the shadow Foreign Secretary, said: "I believe we must strive day and night, whatever it takes, to keep Britain in the European Union."

But Howard Beckett, a senior official at the powerful Unite union, insisted: "It would be a car crash to send Jeremy Corbyn into a general election saying that he could negotiate a credible deal when our position is one to reject that deal."

Most union bosses are keen for the party to avoid alienating Leave supporters, while grassroots members tend to be more Europhile.

Much of the Labour conference so far has been overshadowed by increasingly acrimonious arguments over Brexit and Mr Corbyn's leadership. Shadow ministers fear the party will end up being squeezed between the Tories' pro-Leave stance and the Liberal Democrats' unambiguously anti-Brexit position.

Conservative MPs mocked Labour over the ongoing confusion. Jacob Rees-Mogg joked: "Congratulations to Mr Corbyn who, when assailed from every side, is returning to his Eurosceptic principles."

Priti Patel Says Jeremy Corbyn Will 'Surrender' Borders And Make UK 'Less Safe' .
Home Secretary Priti Patel has launched an attack on Jeremy Corbyn over immigration, accusing him of a “surrender” of Britain’s borders. The Brexiteer declared the Conservatives were “the party of law and order once again” as she claimed the Labour leader and Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott would make the country “less safe”. The sharp broadside comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson faced anger over his use of language in the House of Commons, with MPs – many of whom have received death threats – saying he put them at risk.
