A man has been charged with assault and criminal damage following an incident at a Northern Ireland Primary school.

On Tuesday, a 31-year-old man allegedly forced his way into Primate Dixon Primary School in Coalisland, Co Tyrone , and reportedly assaulted a member of staff and damaged property.

Police confirmed a man had been charged following an incident in the School Lane area of Coalisland on Tuesday morning, September 24.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "A 31-year-old man has been charged with common assault and criminal damage."

The school issued a letter to parents informing them about the incident.

Parents were reassured by the school that 'at no time' did the man have any contact with pupils and all classrooms were immediately put on lockdown and PSNI contacted.

The man is due to appear before Dungannon Magistrates Court on Wednesday October 16. As is normal procedure all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.

A spokesperson for Council for Catholic Maintained Schools (CCMS) said: "CCMS has been notified about the incident that occurred in Primate Dixon PS, Coalisland yesterday.

"We commend the school’s principal and staff who moved so quickly to ensure the safety of pupils whilst the incident occurred. We thank also the PSNI for the swift intervention of its officers who attended and calmly dealt with the incident.
