There were shocking scenes during rush hour this morning as angry commuters fought back against Extinction Rebellion environment protesters.

People stuck at Canning Town station cheered loudly as an activist was dragged to the floor after climbing on top of a busy commuter train.

Video shared on social media appeared to show a number of protesters on top of a Tube train at Canning Town station.

Holding a sign which read 'Business as usual = death', the protesters were met with shouting from angry waiting commuters.

FUMING commuters dragged Extinction Rebellion eco-warriors from the roof of a Tube train as the protesters caused rush-hour chaos in London today. Dramatic footage shows a mob of commuters pulling the Extinction Rebellion protesters off a train roof at Canning Town as a huge crowd cheers.

The backlash to the Extinction Rebellion (XR) demonstrations turned nasty on Thursday morning when a protester was dragged from the roof of a Tube train by angry commuters . But then one commuter , clearly furious about his service being disrupted, starts climbing up towards the protester

In another clip, a man was then seen dragging one of the activists to the floor by his foot, while the protester also appeared to kick at those attempting to pull him off the train.

Scuffles appeared to take place within the crowd but it was not immediately clear who was involved.

A member of TfL staff appeared to stop people from attacking the male Extinction Rebellion member further, by intervening and holding them back.

A number of people have been arrested after there were also protest incidents at Shadwell and Stratford station, the British Transport Police (BTP) said.

There are delays on the Jubilee line and Docklands Light Railway following the incident.

Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, said in a statement: "I strongly condemn the Extinction Rebellion protesters who have targeted the London Underground and DLR this morning.

"This illegal action is extremely dangerous, counterproductive and is causing unacceptable disruption to Londoners who use public transport to get to work.

"It is also an unfair burden on our already overstretched police officers. I urge demonstrators to protest peacefully and within the boundaries of the law."

British Transport Police said on Twitter: "At this time we have three separate incidents involving Extinction Rebellion protest action at Stratford, Canning Town, and Shadwell.

"Arrests have already been made and officers are working quickly to resume services."

The British Transport Police have announced they are investigating the commuters whopulled Extinction Rebellion protesters from the roof of a tube trainearlier this week. Officers from the BTP said they are looking to speak to a number of tube passengers over the “vigilante-style attack” at Canning Town station which saw James Mee, 35, and Mark Ovland, 36, dragged off a Jubilee Line train. Eight XR protesters were arrested as a result of the action but British Transport Police have now confirmed that the commuters involved are also being investigated - MailOnline reports.
