A man in his early 30s has been injured in a paragliding incident at Whiterocks Beach in Portrush , County Antrim. Rescue teams from Coleraine and Ballycastle recovered the man from the sand dunes, where he landed . He was brought to the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine for treatment.

A paraglider has sustained serious injuries after crash landing on a beach at Portrush in front of a number of families.

The man was being watched by walkers on Whiterocks Beach at the East Strand on Sunday afternoon when he got into difficulties.

It is believed he lost control of his paraglider shortly after 2pm when its canopy was caught in strong thermals and spun out of control.

Once source said the canopy collapsed and the man, who is in his 30s, fell to the dunes below.

He said: “He was gliding normally and the winds were catching him he was changing direction and it looked brilliant. It was pretty windy and at that stage it seemed like a great day to get up there.

A spokesperson for Coleraine Coastguard said: “At 1435 today, the Coleraine Coastguard Rescue Team , along with colleagues from our flank station in Ballycastle , assisted NIAS paramedics with the rescue of an injured paraglider, who had come down at the top of sand dunes, near the White Rocks Portrush.”

A spokesperson for the NIAS said: "We received a call at 2.24pm on Sunday saying a paraglider had come down on the beach at Portrush. We sent rapid response and an emergency crew. The injured man was taken to Causeway Hospital and subsequently moved to the Belfast Royal Victoria Hospital."
