A driver “put his foot down” during an alleged impromptu race which ended in a collision that killed his girlfriend, a court heard.

Cardiff Crown Court heard Jay Bayliss accelerated after being overtaken by Neil Brooks and then sped the wrong way around a roundabout before driving side-by-side with the other car.

Giving evidence on the second day of Brooks’ trial witness Michael Shuck said his friend Bayliss “went for it”.

Sophie Brimble from Crickhowell , who was a passenger in her boyfriend Bayliss’ Volkswagen Polo, was 20 when she died in the collision on the A4047 King Street at 12.20am on July 26, 2017.

Brooks, 49, from Lansbury Terrace in Beaufort, Ebbw Vale, denies causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving and he is on trial.

Prosecutors allege Bayliss shares responsibility for her death but he suffered life-changing injuries in the crash and is not fit to attend court.

Mr Shuck said his friend Gareth Mapstone picked him up from Beaufort at around 9pm on July 25, which was a “regular thing”, and they drove to Brynmawr .

The court heard they stopped in a car park and met up with Mr Bayliss – who the witness has known since primary school – and his girlfriend Ms Brimble. The witness said Mr Bayliss went to McDonald’s in Ebbw Vale then they drove back to Beaufort.

He said Brooks, who was driving a Volkswagen Bora, pulled out of a 24-hour garage.

They plan to interview Anne Sacoolas about the crash that killed 19-year-old Harry Dunn in August when his motorcycle collided with a car allegedly driven by Sacoolas outside a British air force base in southern England used by the U.S. military.Sacoolas left Britain shortly after the crash, though police released a statement saying she had previously told them she had no plans to depart.

He told the court Brooks went at a “normal speed” over the bumps in the road and then overtook Mr Mapstone and Mr Bayliss.

Mr Cobbe asked: “Did you notice how Jay responded? The witness replied: “Jay put his foot down and went for it.”

He added: “They were going around the roundabout. Jay went on the wrong side. They just disappeared. He put his foot down and went.”

Asked how close the Polo and Bora were driving, he replied: “Side by side.”

He told the court Mr Mapstone carried on at a “normal pace” and by the time they got to the top of the hill the other cars were “nowhere to be seen”.

Mr Shuck said his friend dropped him home then later: “I had a call from Gareth to say Jay was in a bad way.”

He said he ran to the scene of the collision and saw Mr Bayliss’ car “badly damaged” in the middle of the road.

The trial continues.

The 42-year-old Sacoolas left Britain shortly after the crash.She was granted diplomatic immunity. Dunn's family has launched a campaign seeking its revocation.
