A woman has died after apparently being swept away as "almost biblical" flooding continues to cause heavy disruption in the Midlands and northern England.

The unidentified woman's body was recovered in Darley Dale, near Matlock, at around 10.40am on Friday, after reportedly being swept away by floodwater in Rowsley in the early hours.

It came after some areas were battered by a month's worth of rain in one day, as the Environment Agency repeated warnings for people to stay away from swollen rivers.

Fire crews were deployed to help guide people to safety, while rail and road users were warned against travelling on certain routes.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said they rescued more than 100 stranded people on Thursday night, with around 500 calls to its control room overnight.

Swineshaw in the Peak District saw the most rainfall on Thursday with 112mm, while flood-hit parts of Sheffield experienced 85mm during the same period, according to the Met Office. The average monthly rainfall total for Yorkshire for November is 89mm.

In Toll Bar, near Doncaster, Post Office worker Kathleen Overton, 61, said: "It was almost biblical, I would say. You were just looking out of your window in disbelief at how much of it was coming down.

"People's cars were getting submerged in the water, gardens were ruined, you couldn't drive anywhere. It was carnage."

Elsewhere, shoppers spent a night stranded in Sheffield's Meadowhall shopping centre after all routes home were cut off by the floods.

Shopper Saskia Hazelwood, 17, from Doncaster, said she and her friends "instantly started panicking" when they saw there was no way of getting home.

"At the start we thought it would be fun, a nice sleepover, something to certainly remember," she said.

"But after 14 hours of being stranded in Meadowhall we just couldn't wait to get home, get into our own beds, feel safe again, and catch up on sleep."

Flood warnings in place

Although the Environment Agency reduced its number of flood warnings from above the 100 mark on Friday morning, 75 remain in place in the afternoon.

Of these, 69 are standard warnings ("flooding is expected – immediate action required"), while six are severe warnings, denoting a danger to life.

As well as the warnings, there are a further 100 flood alerts in place, which also cover much of the south of England, and indicate "flooding is possible – be prepared".

Latest UK weather forecast

According to The Met Office, a band of rain working its way across Wales and the Midlands will die out as Friday continues.

In the north-west, areas should stay dry with plenty of sunshine, while the north-east will see more showers.

Overnight, showers will move south-east before clearing, with most of the UK seeing cold, clear conditions with some patches of fog appearing.

On Saturday, there will be rain in western parts, with some heavy spells, which will gradually move into central areas.

It will feel cold throughout the UK, with the threat of some snow in hillier regions.
