PC Martin Hodnett was on his own in a patrol car when he attempted to stop two suspected burglars. He was attacked after chasing the crooks down Simmondley Lane, in Glossop, Derbyshire at 1.47am on March 3. The men rammed his patrol car before smashing his windscreen with sledgehammers.

Four thugs have been jailed forand throwing bricks at the windscreen in a frantic escape bid during a police chase.
In the initial stages of the pursuit, two of the men jumped out the car to hurl bricks at thevehicle.
The shocking footage of the chase shows the bricks smashing the windscreen.
At that point PC Emma Birrell radioed the control room saying: "They are throwing stuff at this vehicle, I've got a smashed windscreen."

The incident happened on September 2015, but footage of the angry driver ramming into moving cars and In one clip, the driver is seen attacking a motorbike, lifting the two-wheeler with the blade only to smash it on Police rushed to the scene, and blocked the road in an attempt to cut off the mad driver.
PC Birrell continued to pursue the vehicle which was travelling at around at 80mph.
A wheel then fell off the car and the vehicle came to a stop.
Butthat the driver then rammed into the police car whilst reversing at speed in the incident on Old Aston Hill, Deeside, North Wales.
All four men were later arrested and charged with various offences including burglary, dangerous driving, driving without insurance and driving whilst disqualified. Another officer was injured whilst the arrests were being made.
The case was heard at Mold Crownon Friday and all four men received custodial sentences.

Detective Constable Lisa Evans of Wrexham CID said: “The sentence will I’m sure bring a degree of relief to many in the local community and I hope it will provide the public with some reassurance and make our communities safer.
“All four men had a complete disregard for their victims and thought they could evade police detection. It is thanks to great partnership work by our officers that these prolific criminals are now behind bars.
"North Wales Police will relentlessly pursue those individuals who cause most harm and this type of behaviour will not be tolerated.”
Temporary Chief Inspector Dave Cust of the Roads Policing Unit added: “Other officers, including the Roads Policing Unit and local policing colleagues were making their way towards the incident, and PC Birrell, despite not knowing the danger she faced, continued to pursue the car whilst single-crewed.
“This was a frightening incident for her and she displayed courage, tenacity and commitment to duty in order to apprehend the males involved.
“This was an appalling act of dangerous driving and it was only by good fortune no one was injured.”
