A huge fire that destroyed a Primark store in Belfast city centre has been extinguished, three-and-a-half days after it began. An investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing and firefighters will remain at the scene over the next few days. The fire service praised the crews who tackled the blaze

Fire crews have dealt with a fire at a block of derelict buildings in south Belfast . The service was called to the premises at the corner of Ormeau Road and Two fire engines and an aerial appliance attended at the scene . Part of the Ormeau Road was closed to city -bound traffic for a short period.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of a blaze in Belfast tonight.

Fire crews were scrambled to the incident in St George's Gardens in the city.

Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Group Commander William Johnston said: "The Northern Ireland Fire Service received a call just after 6pm this evening.

"When crews arrived they discovered a fire in first floor flat and over a period they extinguished it. After a number of searches they concluded that no one was on the premises so luckily nobody was hurt or injured."

Earlier today, emergency crews rescued a man after flooding trapped him in his car.

It's understood the 38-year-old driver had tried to travel around the water but had become stuck as flooding hit parts of the country this afternoon forcing a number of roads to close.

The rescue unfolded on the Finnebrogue Road in Downpatrick, Co Down , around 1pm.

Group Commander Johnston said: "Fire crews arrived and a male was trapped in his vehicle with the flood water around two to three feet deep.

"We were able to rescue the occupant from his vehicle without injury."
