Flames engulfed a a block of flats in Albert Drive after the Strawberry and Spice Garden grocery shop went up in flames at 11.30pm on Sunday evening.

Nicola Sturgeon has paid tribute to the fire service for their part in tackling a large building blaze in her Glasgow constituency.

The First Minister visited the devastating scene in Albert Drive, Pollokshields, where a building has collapsed after being engulfed by fire.

The Strawberry and Spice Garden grocery shop went up in flames at 11.30pm on Sunday evening.

The building collapsed at 5.40am on Monday and residents who live there have been left with nothing.

Fire crews remain at the area more than 12 hours since they first received reports of the blaze.

One man was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Police Scotland have said that they have had no further reports of any more injuries.

Pollokshields is in the First Minister's constituency and she has been there today offering support.

The Glasgow Southside MSP and First Minister for Scotland branded the incident as a “dark day for Pollokshields”.

She said: “I have to pay thanks to the fire service for being incredible for what they’ve done overnight in ensuring that no one was seriously injured.

“It has been an absolute tragedy for everyone in Pollokshields.

"People have lost their homes, a number of businesses have been affected and a number of people have lost an iconic part of the community.

"My thoughts are with everybody who has been affected.

“Obviously as a local MSP I stand ready to offer any advice and assistance I can.

“This is a dark day for Pollokshields and everybody affected is very much in my thoughts.”

A number of roads have been closed by officers in the area as firefighters continue to tackle the flames.

Enquiries into the cause of the blaze remain ongoing.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Road closures are currently in place in and around Albert Drive in the Pollokshields area of Glasgow, this is due to an ongoing incident being dealt with by Scottish Fire and Rescue and Police Scotland.

"Road closures are expected to be in place for several hours.”
