In a victim impact statement read out at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday, Mr Iqbal said: "I thought I would be dead. I have no doubt the attacker would have killed me."

Unable to move his fingers because of damage to his tendons, the terrified driver only managed to escape when Richards was momentarily distracted by a car driving into the cul-de-sac.

Scrabbling for the driver's door handle with his two remaining working fingers Mr Iqbal managed to pull the door shut and drive away with blood soaking through his shirt.

Richards, 28, was traced by police after Mr Iqbal remembered seeing a flat-bed truck parked up outside the house he had delivered the takeaway to at around 10pm. The house, in Lauriston Close, was home to another member of Richards' family.

Officers from South Wales Police were able to link the truck to Richards and CCTV footage showed him at a Brewers Fayre restaurant in Keen Road in Cardiff. Richards had even caused damage to one of the tables at the restaurant by etching his full name into the tabletop.

Mr Iqbal, who held down two jobs as a part-time driver for Mr Chips in Ely and a part-time garage attendant, said he had been unable to leave his house since the attack and thought it unlikely he would ever return to work as a delivery driver.

In his statement he said: "I'm in a mess because of this guy. I am in total shock about how I am still alive.

An Imo`s Pizza delivery driver in St. Louis killed an armed robber after police say he was shot at on the job.

Richard Ace, mitigating, said Richards, from Kitchener Gardens in Riverside , had had "a troubled upbringing" and suffered from a number of drink, drug, and mental health issues.

Mr Ace said: "The defendant accepts full responsibility for his actions. He is still a young man with a young family. He has put his hands up and accepts responsibility."

Judge Michael Fitton QC, handed Richards a 12-year extended sentence for robbery. He said: "Eleven years ago you committed a robbery when you were still a juvenile. Then you committed a more serious offence of robbery.

"Your background shows that you represent a real threat of committing serious offences. You took a view that in, order to release some financial pressure upon you, you would commit an offence."

Giving him credit for pleading guilty to one count of robbery and one count of possession of a bladed weapon at an earlier hearing, Judge Fitton told Richards he would serve a minimum of seven and a half years in custody before he was considered for release.

"You are, in my view, a very serious risk to other people," he added. "Your future is one that gives me grave cause for concern."

Richards was also made the subject of an indefinite restraining order which prevents him from making any contact with Mr Iqbal.
