The family of crash victim Harry Dunn have hit out at the Government for failing to convince Donald Trump to allow his alleged killer to be returned to Britain.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab confronted his US counterpart over the case while Boris Johnson promised to push the President on the issue. But Mr Dunn's father said Mr Raab had been "cold, stiff and impersonal" in his dealings with the family.

Relatives of the teenage biker, who died in a crash in August allegedly caused by Anna Sacoolas, the wife of a US diplomat, demonstrated outside Buckingham Palace on Tuesday night as Mr Trump attended a Nato reception there.

Earlier Mr Raab met Mike Pompeo, the US Secretary of State, and repeated his request that Mrs Sacoolas should agree to face the British justice system. A spokesman said: "The Foreign Secretary again raised UK concerns about the tragic case of Harry Dunn."

Asked about the case, the Prime Minister told reporters on Tuesday: "I have intervened with the President already on that, I think on a couple of occasions, and we are hopeful that progress can be made though I wouldn't want to go further than that, it's by no means a certainty."

Mr Trump - who hosted the Dunns in the White House - said the family were "lovely people" but added that Mrs Sacoolas could not be prosecuted because she had diplomatic immunity at the time of the crash. He said: "We're trying to work something out."

Harry's father Tim Dunn wrote in the Guardian that during an earlier meeting with Mr Raab, the politician had little interest in helping the family. He said: "Mr Raab was cold, stiff and impersonal. He offered his condolences, yet they only came across as empty words.

"I had allowed my hopes to build up, and now I realised we had been brought in on false pretences. It felt to us like a publicity stunt so that Mr Raab could make it look to the public as though he was doing something for us."
