A panel of experts have listed the top 10 most collision-durable and safety-kitted cars of the year - find out which ones should be on your shopping list for 2020.

The top 10 list has been put together by a panel made up of Euro NCAP's secretary general Michiel van Ratingen, director of research at UK vehicle safety and security firm Thatcham Research and What Car?'s consumer editor, Claire Evans.

Strong crash - test performance, collision avoidance systems and high-quality headlights enabled 30 vehicles to qualify for the top honors in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's initial 2019 model -year rankings. Nearly as notable as the vehicles that made it is the list of vehicles that didn't.

The judging criteria requires all 10 cars - bar the untested VW Golf - to have five-star Euro NCAP ratings and high overall Euro NCAP testing scores across all categories.

They also needed to be relatively affordable, come with lots of standard-fit crash avoidance technology - such as Autonomous Emergency Braking and pedestrian and cyclist recognition systems - and intuitive Electronic Lane Keeping systems to prevent drivers from colliding with oncoming vehicles.

These cars also needed to have plenty of driving assistant systems to make driving easier as well as safer. This includes Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Support Systems that combine to reduce fatigue for motorway drivers.

Speaking about the top 10 list, Avery said most car makers have 'raised their game' this year and that drivers have 'never been safer behind the wheel'.
