Boris Johnson's official spokesman denounced the detention as “an unacceptable breach of the Vienna Convention”, which governs diplomatic relations, and should be investigated.

Speaking in the Commons, the Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said: “The regime in Tehran is at a crossroads. It can slip further and further into political and economic isolation.

Mr Raab also urged Iran to release all dual nationals, including Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, held in its prisons to enable them to be “back home with their families”.

He said the treatment of detained British-Iranian citizens has been “well below the standards” expected and they should be released “without condition”.
