Freezing weather is expected to continue across the UK with temperatures predicted to plummet as low as -7C in some areas on Sunday evening.

A cold weather alert has been issued by Public Health England (PHE) from 6pm on Sunday to 6pm on Tuesday, urging people to look after those at risk including the elderly and those with heart problems.

Dr Owen Landeg, principal environmental public health scientist at PHE, said: "Below 18 degrees, changes to the body mean that the risk of strokes, heart attacks and chest infections increase so heating homes to this temperature is particularly important to stay well."

Severe weather protocols have also been activated in some councils over the weekend to give rough sleepers protection from the freezing weather.

Met office meteorologist Alex Burkill told i that the cold weather will continue on Sunday evening, and a fog warning could be put in place on Monday morning.

However, the mercury is set to soar by mid-week.

He said: "It will still be very cold on Sunday night with temperature as low as -7C  in some areas."

"We could also see patches of mist and fog develop in the morning and temperatures will remain in the mid single digits above zero during the day. ."

"But frost will be more limited mid-week and temperatures should peak at 12C by Wednesday"

Despite the freezing temperatures it is unlikely there will be any snow.

"Very little rain is likely to fall between today and Tuesday. We could see a few spots of rain by Wednesday but temperatures will already recover by then," Mr Burkill added.

The cold snap comes after Storm Brendan swept across parts of the UK last weekend.

On Monday last week the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning of high winds across the whole of the west coast, the south-west and north-east of the country between 10am and midnight on Monday.

It marks a change from last month when mercury peaked at 16.8C making it the highest temperatures ever recorded in December.

It trounced Rome and Athens, which could only manage 9℃ and 8℃, respectively. Even Madrid only managed 15℃.
