Residents living in the Conwy Valley have been urged to evacuate their homes following a "large landslip".

People living in nine properties across the Crafnant area of Trefriw have been asked to leave their homes after Storm Ciara caused part of a hill to subside over the weekend of February 8 and 9.

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) said there are concerns that the "area remains unstable" and there is an "immediate risk to properties and highways" nearby.

Conwy Council said people were asked to leave their homes on February 12 and 13.

Storm Ciara brought winds of 90mph and torrential rains to Wales over the weekend. The town of Llanrwst flooded and elsewhere rivers were at high levels and trees were brought down. A beautiful, historic bridge was also washed away and a lorry blew over on the Severn Crossing.

NRW said it is working with North Wales Police and the council to determine whether there are any more movements and have drafted in support from engineering experts.

Sian Williams, NRW's Head of Operations in North West Wales, said: "We are working quickly with a number of partners to monitor the landslip and determine if there are any movements.

"In the meantime, North Wales Police, Conwy County Borough Council and NRW have advised the residents of nine properties to evacuate their homes as there is a concern that this area remains unstable with an immediate risk to properties and highways in the area.

"There are road and footpath closures in place, and we advise people to stay away from the area."

NRW will work with the geoscience and engineering experts to monitor the landslide over the weekend when further rain is expected from Storm Dennis.

The Met Office upgraded its weather warning for Wales on Thursday morning as Storm Dennis prepares to bring 70mph winds and nearly five inches of rain to the country this weekend.

Yellow and amber weather warnings are in place as the system develops in the North Atlantic before tracking eastward toward the UK.
