Scotland is set to be battered by heavy rain and wind this weekend as the Met Office issues a danger to life warning.

Forecasters have put in place an amber warning from noon to 11pm on Saturday for rain in the Borders and Dumfries & Galloway areas.

Authorities are expecting widespread disruption to travel services right across the country as Storm Dennis hits.

In the southerly parts of the country it's believed homes and businesses are likely to be flooded, causing damage to buildings.

Around 40mm of rain could fall in the space of 11 hours with fast flowing or deep floodwater likely to cause a danger to life.

A Met Office statement read: "Spells of heavy and prolonged rain are expected to affect southern Scotland during Saturday, particularly through the afternoon.

"Around 15-25 mm of rain will fall widely with 30-40mm possible, this will combine with snow melt exacerbating the impacts."

A yellow weather warning is also in place tomorrow from 7am to 8pm for wind and rain.

It will affect a large part of the west coast of the country, Edinburgh and the Borders region.

Gusts of up to 60mph are predicted to hit areas of the country with disruption to ferry, air, road and rail services expected.

Michael Matheson, Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure and Connectivity, said: "The Met Office is expecting Storm Dennis to bring another period of adverse weather this weekend, with heavy rain and strong winds forecast for much of Saturday and Sunday, and into Monday morning.

Heightened weather warnings have been issued because of the risk of flooding posed by Storm Dennis . The windy menace will hit the UK on Fast flowing or deep floodwater is also likely, "causing danger to life ", while trains, buses and roads could be hit by closures, cancellations and delays.

SCOTS face a Storm Dennis danger to life warning with homes likely to flood as forecasters put the country on amber alert. "If you are planning to travel by train, ferry or plane, please check with your operators to see if the conditions are having any impact on your services."

Cops are also urging caution and to plan your journey's well in advance over the weekend.

Sergeant Iain Blain from Police Scotland said: "We are advising motorists who will be travelling in affected areas to travel with caution. There is a high risk of disruption with localised flooding expected and we urge drivers to drive to the conditions of the road.

"Be prepared to slow down and drive at speeds that appropriate for the conditions. Plan your journey in advance and allow extra time. You can keep up to date with weather and road information by following The Met Office and Traffic Scotland on social media."
