A major search operation has been launched to find a missing man whose car was found near an aqueduct.

North Wales Police has issued an appeal after a missing 62-year-old man vanished after his car was parked close to Pontcysyllte Aqueduct in Wrexham.

The man has not been named by police, but a short description has been released as they bid to locate him.

A spokesman said: " North Wales Police seek the help of the public in relation to a missing man aged 62 years last believed to be in the vicinity of Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.

"The gentleman is described at 5 foot 7 inches, white male, of slim build with short brown hair.

The force said they had carried out large-scale searches this weekend, but had not found anything.

They said: " North Wales Police have conducted extensive searches of the local area assisted by North East Wales Search and Rescue Team (NEWSAR) but seek new information to assist us in locating this man at the earliest opportunity."

A NEWSAR spokesperson added: "A man remains missing despite considerable search efforts today by many NEWSAR team members working closely with NWP [North Wales Police] officers in challenging conditions.

"If you have any information please contact NWP."
