A fourth person in the UK has died after testing positive for the coronavirus, according to England's Chief Medical Officer.

The latest patient, who was in their seventies and had underlying health conditions, was being treated at the Royal Wolverhampton Hospital in the West Midlands.

It comes as the number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the UK has risen to 319, according to the latest figures from the Department of Health and Social Care.

On Monday Boris Johnson chaired an emergency Cobra meeting to establish the UK's response to the outbreak.

After the meeting, ministers said the UK remained in the containment phase of its plan to combat the spread of the virus.

There are more than 110,000 cases of Covid-19 around the world.

The outbreak has rattled the markets. The UK’s FTSE 100 leading index was down by 8.6 per cent on Monday morning - a four-year low - with investors concerned about an oil price war and the coronavirus outbreak.
